The Doppelgaenger Gallery

The contemporary art gallery Doppelgaenger was established in 2012 in Bari, Puglia (Italy) in the old city centre after a meeting between gallery manager Antonella Spano and collector Michele Spinelli.

As the very name itself suggests, Doppelgaenger pursues two lines of artistic enquiry. The dual nature of the project focuses on both the more contemporary studies in figurative art and experimental work in video art, from installation and performance.
Doppelgaenger’s principle raison d’être is to show the commonalities between the two areas and use this as a device for comparison and study. The gallery is located in the Palazzo Verrone in the heart of the old city, an extraordinary architectural mélange, which over time, from inception as mediaeval tower house has become a noble Renaissance palace and is now a place which plays host to the Contemporary arts.
Moreover, the gallery intends to put an attentive eye on artistic publishing production, meaning the art book as an object whit a clear intrinsic value.
Doppelgaenger acts both as an exhibition space and living residence simultaneously. The gallery managers and their artists inhabit the palace choosing to allow their work and private lives to overlap and these two spheres are constantly intertwining with each other.
Within the natural confines of the gallery Doppelgaenger adopts the concept of Xenìa.

Xenìa is a residency project run in concert with the age-old concept of hospitality and operates according to an unwritten set of rules and customs.
The programme has a revolving schedule so that the artists in effect become pro-tempora members of the gallery, which will allow them the opportunity of creating new dimensions. Their activities and their primary rôle will result in the time spent in residency being totally devoted to the individual demands of creating art.
Xenìa is also a vehicle for interpreting the urban surrounds, which, due to their historical interest and cultural characteristics, can inspire artistic creation. The Doppelgaenger gallery is not located in the Palazzo Verrone (one of the most important and symbolic buildings of the old historical centre of Bari) by mere chance – this is a setting where the artists can integrate with their surrounds and forge a powerful sense of symbiosis with them. This idea comes to fruition through adopting the practices and customs of the setting as one’s own, through reinterpreting its traditions and concepts, being witnesses to its historic and recent past, a place which will forever be inspirational for creating art.

It’s LIQUID International Contest – First Edition 2012: Yuko Asai
Yuko Asai is the video art winner of Its LIQUID international contest – First Edition 2012 with her video Make-up, up against 42 other artists.

Born in 1985 in Aichi (Japan) Yuko Asai is a young and promising video artist. She completed last year her Master in Fine Arts at Tsukuba University of Art & Design and passed her Master’s thesis on the potential of make-up as an expressive medium focusing of Cindy Sherman and similar artists.

Yuko Asai, Japan – still image from “Make up”, 2011

Her first artwork, Make-up (2011), focuses on this fascination about cosmetics. They have indeed long played an important part in non-verbal communication, religious ceremonies and so on. For Yuko Asai, they are not simple adornments aiming at making one’s appearance more attractive. She sees them as tangible signs of power, ideas, emotions, attitudes and hopes of people that they create on the surface of their bodies. The artists believes cosmetics are also used to express thoughts of “I always want to be like I am now (a young woman), fears about becoming “old”, as well as rebellion against “the ideal image of womanhood demanded by society”.

Talk edited by Camilla Boemio
Speaker: Luisa Zanzani – Franco Belsole – Shaun Gladwell
Hidden Cities are the first point analysis of this talk. With the screening of Luisa Zanzani’s video. The photographic serie “Adria” presents, in a pure documentary genre, a province which has never been so well narrated. The absence of man is the hallmark of the documentary genre.

exhibition & screening places: Riparte cafè & Spazio Suite

The deadline for applications is June 21, 2012.

The selections will be based on the main concept of “Hidden Cities & Hybrid Identities” that analyses the hybridization of physical and social identities in the contemporary cities.

“The colors of the hidden cities with his hybrid Identities merge: the day and the night, the neon light that illuminates the facades, the patchwork of contaminations, the passers, layers from top the bottom, undergrounds, built geometric shapes in which to play and invent memories. The urban landscape, and his human bodies, is not only formally captured but also perceptually. Its dynamics and features: into excess, in the immobile, or in the unfinished. Migrations and transformations are self generated in these cities. We can see them as voracious bodies which reconstruct utopias. Seductive idiosyncrasies in which the imitation, the repetition, the symbol and the sublime are connected to the estrangement of modern alienation. Image yourself in these streets, between the blocks and the buildings, portrayed as an unexpected passer by of the filmic flow of an unstable and polymorphic scenery”. Camilla Boemio, 2012

The number of works with which you can participate is unlimited.
All video works must be on DVD (PAL or NTSC), no matter what the original source medium. The maximum length of videos should be 10 minutes.

Hidden Cities | Istanbul (Turkey)

General Information.
Hidden Cities, an international videoart festival and photography exhibition, will be held in the magic city of Istanbul. Koza Visual Culture and Arts Association, the venue of the event, will open its doors on Thursday, May 10th until Saturday, May 12th. Sixty-one artists, thirty-eight video artists and twenty-three photo artists from twenty-two different countries have been selected to be part of this project.

The selections has been based on the main concept of “Hidden Cities” that analyses the hybridization of physical and social identities in the contemporary cities.

Hidden Cities – The gossamer of precarious realities in contemporary metropolis
“It is a sociological and urban topic rather than an architectural one: hidden cities, without being hyperbolic, whether in negative terms, regarding their size, their population, their infrastructural problems, their tendency to criminality, or in positive terms, regarding their dynamism, their variegated street life, the sheer originality of so much culture on any level, the intensity of their artistic production. Nevertheless this contest entitled Hidden Cities does not aim at confirming any of the standard images of any kind of metropolis in the world, not those of the multiplicity of guide books, not those of glossy photo albums, and not those of the authors of dirty realism or sociopolitical testimony.

Even if the Western tendency of city planning is marked by a new class segregation, urban renewal, massive housing projects, and highway building programs, historically shaped cities which represent a crossing of ancient and modern cultures, are mirrored by spatial polarization of poverty increasingly sub-urbanized (which its especially migrants), but even displayed by more soft and intangible forms of alienation and marginalization challenging the issue of citizenship. Frequently hidden cities come into being because the gap between the complexity of spatial urban form and the complexity of social process and missing economic resources to keep up with progress contributes to social degradation, and isolates its residents definitely from society. Besides these factors mentioned above, the rapid increase of people living in cities is one of the most important global health issues of the 21st century.

Beyond a mere documentation, the basic idea lanced by the event is an international confrontation that should reflect the hidden realities urban dwellers are facing, and highlight the need for concerted action. Urban averages often mask hidden pockets of ill-health and overlooked populations. By unmasking hidden cities the most deprived populations can be identified and practical measures can be set to improve their precarious existence.

But hidden cities also host a magic treasure which has got lost in well designed anonymous sky scraper geometries. The mechanism of uncontrolled and unpredictable situations, the struggle for life brings people together, unlocks their doors, orientating their look towards the neighbor or a casual passer-by, ready to talk, ready to smile. Hidden cities refer to those places that provide a slice of hidden urban life, where inhabitants enjoy their relationship with the city. It is not a matter if the city itself becomes a protagonist in photography or video art but how the city becomes a place for human lives and how those lives necessarily involve interaction with the dimensions, with the parameters, with the convolutions. Of course there is something like a real city. But that real city has no real meaning in and of itself.
Hiwa K – Cooking with Mama / Occupy Dinner

Cooking with Mama – Occupy Dinner is a series of webcast cooking events that will take place in the locations where occupations and protests have occurred. Starting in Berlin, the project is a call for people to gather once again, in the form of a dinner. During the event, Hiwa’s mother who lives in Iraq, will be giving cooking instructions to her son, over Skype. Her recipes and instructions will be translated from Kurdish to English for the participants to follow. At the same time, a group of people will be translating the recipes into other languages and passing them on to other countries. Occupy Dinner is the continuation of the project Cooking with Mama initiated by Hiwa K in 2006.

Cooking with Mama – Occupy Dinner will continue in Berlin throughout the summer on the second Sunday of every month. Participants will be invited to contact a cook (relative or friend) and host an Occupy Dinner, with the expectation that the event can evolve and become a regular occurrence.

The Wundergarten by Uri De Beer
San Giuliano Park, Venice / Mestre
April / November 2012

On Saturday 21 April, 2012 the Istituzione Bosco e Grandi Parchi of the Municipality of Venice presents the land art installation Wundergarten, planned and realised by the Israeli artist and architect Uri De Beer. On this occasion we remember his latest work “The Water Fates’ Flowers” – a monumental floating installation as a contemporary quotation of Monet’s Water Lilies in their infinite chromatic tonalities – which consists in a series of transparent platforms covered with brightly coloured duds. Due to the public success of the art work in 2011, the installation floats again in the Lake of Egrets, an artificial water area inside the San Giuliano Park until November.

These environment works count among a series of eco-art installations named Plastiflora (plastic + flora) works for which the artist assembles already used soft plastic bottles of mineral water and of any other kind of drink. In this contest one should remember De Beer’s studies at the Kunstakademie of Dusseldorf and one of his favourite teachers: Joseph Beuys. The choice of the material reflects De Beer’s engagement in recycling, in ecological and social issues and in his conception of creating art for the community together with the community. His new land art proposal “Wundergarten” is an innovative ecological, economical and social landscape design which covers a soft hill with a brightly coloured carpet of flowers.

Resuming the various perspectives of his artistic concept, De Beer succeeds in connecting four categorical imperatives which ought to be adopted by the contemporary art world. “The Water Fates’ Flowers” represent an environmental artwork due to scientific principles but site specific coordinates. The artist maintained a low level of production costs by using re-used materials. He integrated people of different origin, status and education in the process of realization which is a rarely practised social commitment.

The event, conceived and curated by Elis Saint-Juste Gluckstein, takes place in collaboration with the Department of Educational Politics of the City of Venice in the contest of the program “Educational itineraries”. Due to the laboratories in numerous schools in Venice and Mestre a remarkable quantity of bottles could be transformed into flowers which are the prime matter of De Beer’s installation. Following to a similar experience in 2011, Spazio Thetis promotes Uri De Beer’s “Wundergarten” as a project that reconciles important artistic with environmental and social criteria.

Special Thanks for the financial support go to Banca Santo Stefano and to San Marco Colorificio, and to the Circolo Vele di Mestre and Arte in Bragora for logistic assistance. The sculpture class of the artist Tarshito, Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, assisted in the process of realisation of the eco-garden.

“The Water Fates’ Flowers” and “Wundergaretn” belong to the first chapter of the Venetian itinerary Contaminating – For the upcoming Thought, a cultural urban mise en scène in twelve different sites, with twelve plots and twenty five internatinal protagonists spread over the city of Venice, Islands and Lagoons conceived, planned and curated by the TheSeven.
