Aimez vous les abeilles? Vi piacciono le api? Do you like bees?

Venice and Milan turn on the beehive culture on roofs and terraces.
January / October 2012

Talking about bees in this period of social, political and cultural confusion seems an appropriate example for how things could work in the world if we were less arrogant and more orientated to save what we possess instead of trying to get more. The bees army merits a lot of observations, analysis, research work and studies as we owe a big part of our wellness to the bees artists. In the course of the last ten years very serious circumstances put the bees’survival at risk and at the same time the infinite quantity of benefits bees offer to humanity.

Increasing pollution, the use of pesticides and the lack of a vegetation that creates a favourable micro-climate for their activities – these three factors have contributed to the looming threat that the ecological balance, supported by the bees in an incisive manner, is not granted any more.

A way out of the impasse is the development of innovative methods which explore alternative urban spaces in which the bees find a fertile base in order to execute activities for the production of their goods. This is the objective of an innovative competition dedicated to the design and the planning of functional beehives which can be easily reproduced by hobby bee keepers living in the cities, by any kind of bee sympathizers, by people who would like to contribute to the idea of offering a refuge to the bees in urban spaces like on the roofs, on terraces or near the windows on any kind of wall.

The competition has the patronage of the public administrations of the Veneto and of the City of Venice and a final exhibition of realized beehives will take place at the Museo di Storia Naturale in collaboration with the Fondazione Musei Civici Veneziani in September 2012, contemporaneously with the Biennale of Architecture.

The competition rules can be downloaded here.

The competition is officially addressed to students of fine arts, architecture and design, and to young architects and designers under 30, without restriction regarding their nationality. Three of the best proposals will get an award under the form of a scholarship. Demands of participation can be sent by mail to abeilles.competition@gmail.com.

Download the application form here.

The second category is addressed to all the bee lovers in the world without restriction of age, nationality and profession in order to create a functional and aesthetically innovative beehive which should be adopted by citizens in order to increase the return of the bees to the cities. A commission of landscape architects, bee keepers and experts, will value the proposals and a final exhibition of the objects will take place in Milan in autumn in 2012.

If you want to partecipate in the second category, please download the application form here.

On December 20th the project was presented at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera, Milan, where a group of experts, for the first time, lanced the idea of commitment. Brera is already engaged in an innovative pilot – experiment to create beehives for the cities with the students.

The project “Aimez-vous les abeilles“, conceived and curated by Elisabeth Saint Juste Gluckstein, and coordinated by the international group TheSeven Projects, is an example of synergy between public administrations, private societies, local sponsors, volunteers deriving from different fields of action, professional beekeepers and research workers, architects and landscape planners, curators and critics. The adherents desire in an unanimous way to contribute to the possible return of the bees in the towns in order to contrast efficiently Albert Einstein’s serious thought on our future: If bees disappeared from Earth, only four years of life would be left to Mankind.

Further information and study material can be found here.

The project is promoted by Sopramaresotto, Consorzio Apicoltori Province Gorizia e Udine, Milano Food Week.

Ruoli Segreti e Ruoli Proibiti / Hidden & Forbidden Identities | Venice (Italy)

General Information.
In the prestigious spaces of Palazzo Albrizzi in Venice starts Ruoli Segreti e Ruoli Proibiti / Hidden & Forbidden Identities, an international videoart festival and photography exhibition which opens the doors on Saturday, February 11th at 17:30 with a musical interlude by Enzo Caroli and Simone Rocchi. Fifty-one video artists and twenty-eight photo artists from thirty different countries has been selected to be part of this project.

The event, organized by TheSeven and International ArtExpo, will be divided into three sections: a photography exhibition that reflects the concept of the Carnival in a pluralism conceptual view. A videoart festival indoor that will be screened every day in the afternoon in different places of Venice. Outdoor screenings entitled Architetture Velate / Architecture in Disguise with the works of five artists that cover the substance of the buildings with a second calligraphy skin.

The selections has been based on the main concept of “Hidden & Forbidden Identities“
“Whoever might believe to understand a phenomenon without knowing its background, loses the opportunity to cope with an instructive manual about the sense or nonsense of masking. This is even more true in relation to an event whose psychological, religious and ethnographic implications represent a real source of studies and virtuosity of the soul and of the body. We should remember that in the myths of different world cultures, the tribes in Africa, various peoples in Asia, in North America, in Europe, the mask has a double matrix: it is connected with an archetype of the human soul, with aggression, and on the other hand it is correlated with the essential passage during an initial ritual of death and life. What has remained of these myths and of past archetypes in our every days’ disguise? Carnival means mask, Carnival means disguise, Carnival permits any kind of funny odd things. Whoever feels a sudden desire to change, himself or his environment, from any point of view, is mature for Carnival.” Elis Saint Juste Gluckstein, 2011

Contaminante – For the Upcoming Thought is the provoking title of a project, conceived and curated by the TheSeven, which represents a contemporary story in twelve chapters situated in twelve different sites in the City of Venice and in its Lagoons. The connection of all these places is a manual for an intriguing alternative travel into literature, into the world of fairy tales which get materialized through art, design and architecture. The updated map of Contaminante offers permanent site specific art works realized by international artists in ten sites throughout 2012.

212GALLERY is pleased to present a group of six new large-scale sculptural works by Mark Gonzales (b. 1969). This exhibition marks the first time this series of mirror poems has been on view since its unveiling at Los Angeles MoCA’s historic survey of street art (Art in the Streets, 2011).

In this body of work, a synthesis occurs between Gonzales’ trademark linguistic and physical modes of expression. Gonzales’ poetry, simultaneously impulsive and profound, is energetically rendered in spray paint on the slick surfaces of six prodigious mirrors. The epodic exploration of various themes using “automatic spelling” and oft-invented syntax as seen in Gonzales’ countless self-published zines is revisited in these monumental works.

Though it is Gonzales’ dynamically-executed verse that elicits pause and demands closer study, the corporeal qualities of these works quickly seduce. In a colloquial nod to “skate culture”, Gonzales’ use of spray paint suggests reclamation of the raw graffiti-style textthat is so often associated with skating. By way of the monumental and uniquely architectural ground, the viewer is allowed – forced, perhaps – to physically occupy the space around the art and the art object itself, thereby merging the acts of creation and experience – and conflating the roles of artist and patron.

Mark Gonzales began his professional skateboarding career 30 years ago; a legendary athlete, Gonzales went “pro” in his early teens. Gonzales has always been a prolific art-maker and writer, and first began showing his work in the early 1990s. He has had solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in Japan, Germany France, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the Netherlands, in addition to New York and Los Angeles. This is Gonzales’ first show in Aspen.
