Luca Curci‘s conversation with performer Federica Barcellona, after her participation in Future Identities – Bodies. Places. Spaces festival.

Since 1990 Federica Barcellona has been focused on body message of performing actor, starting from an intense study of the Theater of research. In 1996 she graduated at Dams with thesis “Gipsy flamenco’s dancing like an artistic-sociological expression”. Constantly in communication between performance and various media, her creation consists of body composition, video, music, photography and objects.

Luca Curci Your work has just been exhibited during Future Identities – Bodies. Places. Spaces: can you talk about your personal experience in Venice with International ArtExpo?

Federica Barcellona I have found an independent and very well managed organization that carefully picks up artists and artworks with the goal to expose them to an audience particularly interested in contemporary culture and new artistic researches. Freedom is the keyword of International ArtExpo and of my artistic research. […] Walking down the streets in Venice, wondering and exploring Ca’ Zanardi’s surrounding, like Strada Nuova, I decided to start the performance from the outside with interactions with a spontaneous public. My message was a feeling about reality: “Stop, hold on and have a real and closer look around you”. The performance, started in the streets, ended inside Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi, where other people were waiting for the show, ready to achieve what we were ready to share. We carried inside the energy of the open-air’s performance. Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi is a divine and ancient location, so helpful for “Volo Nero”. The energy was fully nourishing into the action.

L. C. – Can you talk about the artwork you presented in Venice? How is it linked with the festival’s theme?

F. B. “Volo Nero” performance and its video are inspired by seven Israeli women’s movement called “Women in Black”. In the 1988 in Jerusalem they shown up on a square silently standing for one hour, with black clothes, in a simple action: looking at the eyes of other people walking by. They done it every Friday. Theirs was a human and political demonstration to say stop to the government and military occupations by Cisgiordania and Gaza. My performance wants to involve people into an experience. The poetic force of the act gave me the inspiration. It was such a strong movement, like a huge wave, able in a very short time to involved and inspired women in Tel Aviv, Haifa, London, Amsterdam, New York, and Rome. “Women in Black” became a mark to push women overseas to reach the strongest desire of peace on earth […]. I believe in the possibility to built a different society, made of real relationship, dialogs and life. […] It has been a very nice experience, realized thanks to Yetta, Caternia Scarpa, Camilla Gato and Valentina Mazzetto.

L. C. – What are you currently working on?

F. B. Currently I’m working on various projects, all of them with the same aim. I’m working on the visual art project and performance “Human Dolls”, started in the 2012, in collaboration with professional actress like Emanuela Rolla (also in “Volo Nero” with Margherita Remotti, Virginia Meirano, and more). It’s focused on the constrictions of being closed inside an image, keeping a position, having a role. My work is eclectic so Human Dolls became also part of a play in the theatre: “N nella casa di Bambola”. I want to realize the project as a performance too. I’m also working on a theatre performance, “Rifugio”, about the feeling of be blocked, stock in a cage made of our fears.

L. C. – What do you think about International ArtExpo organization?

F. B. – I really think these guys are making something so necessary during these time of artistic crisis. It needs an independent organization, free of conventional roles and old structures which don’t permit art expressions to be free and be shared with different kind of public. It was possible to me to check the results straight away. The organizers are very nice people and that’s so important to me.

L. C. – Do you think International ArtExpo organization can represent an opportunity for artists?

F. B. – Yes, of course. I think it is very important to check a result straight away, from an artist point of view. And International ArtExpo gives this opportunity.
