Ocean Room by Koichi Takada Architects

Located just across the water from Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay, Ocean Room inhabits part of the former Overseas Passenger Terminal adjacent Sydney’s historic Rocks district. The minimalist cuisine of head chef Raita Noda, is matched by the simple yet effective interior, designed in collaboration with Yasumichi Morita of Glamorous, Japan.

The design outcome of the collaboration resulted in a unique dining setting where the floor is enveloped under a chandelier of 40,000 suspended timber dowels. The canopy gives way to large glass panels that offer impressive views on Sydney’s iconic Opera House.

The experience of the Ocean Room restaurant begins under a dark canopy of timber dowels in the lounge bar. A transition occurs as you walk under the timber curtain, the atmosphere changes as you enter the light filled and spacious dining area.

The timber ‘wave’ above the restaurant, creates a perceived dialogue with the silhouette of the Sydney Opera House.

The motions of the harbour breeze create gentle movement and clacking of the suspended timber dowels above, a subtle reference to Japanese furin and a gesture that links the Ocean Room to the movement of a wave and the harbour beyond.
