ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS | VENICE 2018
The 3-days / 7-days ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS are part of VAA – Venice Architecture Academy, the academic division of SURFACES FESTIVAL and will be presented in Venice at Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi, THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space, and other prestigious venues and historical buildings, in the months between May and November 2018, in the same period of the BIENNALE ARCHITETTURA 2018 – 16th International Architecture Exhibition.
The workshops include tours of the city of Venice to approach directly the Architectural photography in different environmental conditions and for different kinds of Architectural places all over the city: Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square), St Mark’s Basilica, St Mark’s Campanile, the Doge’s Palace, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana and the Zecca of Venice by Jacopo Sansovino, the Grand Canal, Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge), Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs), Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of Saint Mary of Health) by Baldassarre Longhena, Giudecca Canal, church of San Giorgio Maggiore and Il Redentore (church of the Most Holy Redeemer) by Andrea Palladio, the Ca’ D’Oro, palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti, and the other historical palaces on the Grand Canal and the main canals of Venice.
These courses provide practical instruction in the fundamentals of analog and digital SLR and medium/large format camera operation, film exposure, colour and black and white techniques, digital imaging, and studio lighting connected to the Architectural photography. From camera position and image framing to exposure control and supplementary lighting, a wide array of photographic techniques, as used by architectural photographers, are discussed and demonstrated.
The workshops will explore the opportunities to develop technical skills and experimental photographic techniques for personal artistic exploration. Final projects will be presented in a digital presentation during the opening of one of ?????, during SURFACES FESTIVAL: participants’s works will be included in the exhibition!
During the workshops will be presented and analyzed the architectural photographies and the works’ presentation of Zaha Hadid, Foster + Partners, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Calatrava, MAD Architects, BIG Architects and all the most important contemporary architectural firms.
Lectures, readings, group discussions, and site visits encourage aesthetic appreciation of the medium and a deeper understanding of Architectural photography, as well as a critical awareness of how images in our culture are produced and constructed. Work in progress is continuously presented and discussed in a critical forum.
At the end of the course all the participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi (Cannaregio 4132, Venice) is a residential palace dating back to the 16th century which, over the centuries, has been added on to by various noble Venetian families and is one of the most evocative and beautiful palaces in the city of Venice. Sumptuous and possessing particular charm, Ca’ Zanardi is located in a most peaceful setting and has its own delightful private garden as well as a magnificent terrace full of sun and colours.
Ca’ Zanardi is located close to the Ca’ D’Oro, the splendid 15th century gothic palace along the Grand Canal. It is easily reachable by foot, after a two minute walk from the Ca’ D’Oro water bus stop, or by boat using the palazzo’s private pier positioned along the fetching Santa Caterina canal.
