Solar Carve

Architecture | December 25, 2019

Sculpted by the angles of the sun, Solar Carve (40 Tenth Ave) explores how shaping architecture in response to solar access and other site-specific criteria can expand its potential to have a positive impact on its environment. Located at the edge of Manhattan between the High Line park and the Hudson River, the building takes its unique form from the geometric relationships between the allowable envelope and the sun's path. In addition to producing a faceted, gem-like facade, this integrated response allows the building to benefit the important public green space of the High Line-privileging light, fresh air, and river views to the public park-while also becoming a new iconic silhouette on the New York skyline. With the major exhibition "Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors" the Vitra Design Museum aims to reopen the conversation about the contemporary private interior and its evolution. In a captivating narrative leading visitors backwards in time, the exhibition will highlight important societal, political, urban, and technical shifts that have shaped the design and the use of the Western interior over the last 100 years. From current issues facing the domestic domain - such as the efficient use of dwindling urban space to the blurring of work-life boundaries - the journey includes our fascination with loft-living in the 1970s, the shift from formal to informal dwelling in the 1960s, the rise of household appliances in the 1950s, and the introduction of open-space planning in the 1920s. INTERVIEW: IRIS SCHIEBENER

Interviews | December 21, 2019

In the beginning, my artistic development was clearly shaped by the accuracy of my graphic profession. In the beginning, the focus was on realistic painting, the precise observation of the lights, shadows and perspective. This was also reflected in my choice of motif; landscapes fascinated me as well as still lifes, faces or macro shots of z.B. flowers or objects. In the course of my artistic development, my pictures became more free and expressive, which developed up to the abstract representation. However, my preferred materials such as acrylic and oil remained, often combined in mixed techniques, with structures or organic elements to give the respective motifs an individual depth and meaningfulness.
