My collection of paintings ‘New Shoes’ began as a challenge. I had been a sculptor all of my life, working from the figure exclusively. After many years of working in clay, I yearned to experiment with a different medium. I had dabbled briefly with painting and so the canvas felt like a natural choice for a new beginning. This time it felt free and wonderful. I went from the figure and terracotta to the world of acrylics and abstract expressionism. When I paint, I think about space, color and balance. Canvas size varies but I prefer the openness of large-scale pieces. I try hard not to plan in advance. If I think too much before I begin, I am not able to work.

Miss Ortiz playfully indulges her imagination with curious inspiration. This journey of “colorful discovery” continued to flourish throughout her school years with “artistic competition recognition.” Seeking to refine her talents, she pursued a design degree from the San Francisco City College. She also attended specialized classes in advertising and film from the Los Angels of School of Design. Ready to start her career, Miss Ortiz received an internship from entertainment design company which evolved into the role of an Art Director for various Hollywood entertainment assignments. Her artistic and leadership skills would be responsible for a series of successful advertising campaigns.

Understanding my artist work as a social plastic contribution of innovative and integrating forms I integrate life onto art and art into life. This is the reason of a big variety of means in my work reaching from ready made to glass design, video, performance, drawings, painting to sound sculptures… Music always has been an important part of my work: singing in choirs all my life and practicing several instruments, mainly flutes, shakuhachi, accordeon, and always keen on learning more… Creating sound sculptures in real and digital form placing them into spaces. As you can see my glass work is on very high standard. Luckily I could collaborate with the best glass workers of CR in the end of the last century. I got direct insight c´by working with them for about 6 years. Glass is still my dream material to explore!

Sally De Courcy

Sally De Courcy . UK

Sally de Courcy qualified in 2016 from the University of Creative Arts, Farnham with a first- class honours degree, scholarship and masters with distinction in Fine Art. She is interested in repetition of cast objects and works in different mediums including bronze. The objects are re-assembled to reveal a narrative. Her medical experience of working with refugees is reflected in her work, which often stands for those who are treated as less than human. The philosophical reasons for repetition of violence through history explored by Butler and Zizek have influenced her, together with artists Doris Salcedo, Ai Weiwei and Mona Hatoum who transcend their autobiographical experiences to comment on thematic human issues. Recently her work concerns humanitarian aspects of the COVID19 pandemic.

Yi Kai

Yi Kai . China

I was born in China and lived there for half of my life, experiencing the effects of the Cultural Revolution from 1966 – 1976. In the 1990’s I immigrated to the United States and built a new life here. Life experiences under two entirely different cultures, languages, and ideologies weigh heavily on my conceptual thinking and approach to painting. My formal art training was divided between Chinese traditional painting and western oil painting. Since then, I have been immersed in the world of painting for decades. Since the very beginning, my intention has been to convey my own interpretations and critiques of contemporary life, and to express those thoughts with traditional techniques of painting. My artwork is primarily driven by lines and shapes instead of light and three dimensional space.
