Established in 2015, Autonomous is a company that prides itself on technical innovation, simplicity, design, quality and accountability. Following the development of their first product, a robot assistant named Maya, the companies’ modus operandi was discovered: the creation of smart, productivity-hacking products. The story of Autonomous, Inc begins like many small but scrappy team startups: a few ambitious engineers, “so crazy it just might work” ideas, and a willingness to take risks and think of solutions to problems in new and innovative ways. At the start, the Autonomous founding team wanted to integrate their proprietary AI software into a standing desk, leveraging their combined specialties in hardware and software. Though the initial results were successful, the team soon realized as the company grew that the AI they had developed would be difficult for the mass market to adopt. Instead, they held onto their DNA as hardware and software engineers and produced the astoundingly popular SmartDesk and ErgoChair. That is the DNA that still powers Autonomous to this day. All of Autonomous’ products are produced as a result of intense study of the market and customers’ needs and feedback. Their current product lineup features innovative hardware and software solutions ranging from standing mats and active sitting stools, to the upcoming SmartDesk Pro integrated with an app developed in-house.

The SmartDesk and ErgoChair were both developed to be as ergonomic and user-centric as possible, while adhering to a sleek and modern minimalist design aesthetic that would complement any professional or home setting. The Autonomous team knew they needed to build their products with long-lasting, high quality materials, and that they needed to be as adjustable and intuitive as possible. They needed to create tools that were attractive to people in a wide variety of professions and work environments. Most importantly, these products needed to be accessible to as broad of a demographic as possible – not just those who could afford more costly competing brands.

Autonomous makes the robot assistant (Maya) in the office, while looking for a lift engine for the robot, it appears the question “Why is the table not lifting?” Traditional tables are very boring, not adjustable. Sitting work too long is not good for the spine. There is no standing table yet (this is the first standing table in the world). Autonomous always think about how to make users healthier, so combined with the mind of technology, we create a new thing – SmartDesk.

After selling our first SmartDesk for 2 months, Autonomous thought of developing a new chair to match the desk and fit in with the original idea of our smart office: healthier, ergonomic. We searched for a new chair worldwide, US, Europe (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal). Then we learned that European design looked cool but too stiff (focus on durability), they also didn’t focus on sitting experience but on art. American office chairs focused on the customer feel while they sit however, were too expensive. Then after 3 months of searching we found a design of optimum features, look and price. Autonomous spent the next 3 months on upgrading, customizing each component of ErgoChair.

The design process for the ErgoChair Pro + has been highly meticulous. To start, Autonomous coordinated extensive research across our teams in search of inspiration. Once the framework was set on natural structures, countless hand-drawn designs were prepared combining various natural forms to create something wholly unique. Once we reached a consensus on an overall direction for the design, our 3D Design team began modeling the proposed design in a virtual space. From this medium, the team was able to create a realistic representation of surface dimensions and better understand the chairs’ potential. This work became the basis for the prototype. Through extensive testing and experimentation, elements were added and removed from the design during the prototype stage until the chair’s capacity could be fully realized. No expense was spared, and no stone left unturned. This process allowed the ideas behind the conical springs, natural spine design and unique use of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) to be brought to life.

WorkPod by Autonomous is a tiny backyard office and aims to bring you the most private space for working from home. Designed to be plopped in a spacious backyard, the structure offers “fresh solution completely redefining the home office, providing maximum focus during every working hour,” according to the company behind it. It features floor-to-ceiling windows and an angular roof; plus a sturdy oak, walnut and aluminum build.

Each WorkPod is made from the finest selection of materials & comes in 17 prefabricated components. Shipped directly to your location, quick assembly takes only 1 day. To ensure stability no matter how uneven your surface, the Pod’s foundation can be adjusted up to 4.5 inches. Compatible with most ground types – gravel, brick, grass, concrete, etc. The WorkPod is prefabricated into 17 components, making it easy to transport & straightforward to assemble. Quick to build, each WorkPod takes roughly 8 man-hours to complete. Built to last, the WorkPod is completely weather resistant, providing comfort all year long. Noise & heat insulation helps create the perfect environment to focus, knuckle down, & work. Super easy to power, the Pod’s electrical wiring is completely set up in advance.
