Beautiful Lace & Carine Gilson
Fashion & Lace Museum, Brussels
July 10, 2019 – April 19, 2020
The delicateness of the lace, the lightness of the silk, the finesse of the motifs and the expert couture: the Fashion & Lace Museum invites visitors to discover the sensual, sophisticated world of Carine Gilson and also offers a historic dialogue with lace through symbolic pieces from the incomparable collection of the Museums of the City of Brussels. For centuries, lace made our capital famous amongst the greatest in the world. Paying tribute to a local heritage with an international reputation, the Fashion & Lace Museum is the only one in Brussels to present the history of this exceptional fabric, to the delight of lace fans from the world over.
The pieces from the Maison Carine Gilson combine skill and modernity; they are worn by famous actresses and snapped by the greatest photographers. Her signature is the lace inlay, an artistic task in itself. Could the Fashion & Lace Museum dream of a better ambassador than Carine Gilson to promote this timeless fabric? In this new exhibition, the Brussels designer reveals what inspires her: the Garden of Eden and Japanese-inspired kimonos, as well as Art Nouveau and the works of famous painters. She talks about her encounters and her collaborations with high-flying artisans. She describes the creative process for her sophisticated, luxury pieces. The codes of her Maison are implicitly revealed because, as with every Maison de Couture, a unique DNA runs through her three decades of creation.
Since 2017 and its change of name, the Museum has positioned itself as the benchmark for the history of fashion in the heart of Belgium; to mark its 30th anniversary, it is opening its doors to contemporary Brussels and Belgian designers such as Olivier Theyskens, Jean-Paul Lespagnard, students from La Cambre Mode(s) and now Carine Gilson. With Beautiful Lace, the Fashion & Lace Museum is showcasing traditional craftsmanship, a heritage dear to couture, from a Belgian Maison that perpetuates the tradition of high-quality lace in Brussels.
The exhibition offers an astonishing encounter between two key moments for lace, which has had the world’s crème de la crème at its fingertips for the last 200 years. For the last 30 years in Brussels, Carine Gilson has been creating couture lingerie that combines silk and lace. Beautiful Lace & Carine Gilson transports us to a fantasy world of sensuality, preciosity and virtuosity. It will feature around 50 creations by the Maison Carine Gilson, tracing her career and entering into a dialogue with key pieces from the Museum’s lace collection.
