The new Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver provides a multitude of places both indoors and out for informal gathering, presentation, making and remaking, which is at the heart of Emily Carr’s multidisciplinary arts learning.

Distinct program areas are linked by light-filled atria that create nodes of visual connection, transparency and social interaction. The building acts as a versatile, ever-changing canvas that reveals its full range of activity and is designed to enable a high degree of collaboration among students, faculty and staff.

The Aboriginal Gathering Space embraces design elements in the tradition of a Coast Salish longhouse and supports the active participation of a vibrant Aboriginal community at Emily Carr. Painting studios enjoy north-facing light in lofty top-floor studios and sculpture and ceramics are in proximity to outdoor working and display environments.

From vantage points throughout, the building captures inspiring views of the Vancouver skyline and Coastal Mountains. At ground level, an Arts Plaza and transparency connect with an emerging academic and cultural community for which Emily Carr University is positioned to be the welcoming anchor.
