I started my career in photography after taking an elective course while I was in architecture school. I decided to try photography because I thought I was terrible at it. After our first assignment – to go out and shoot a roll of film – we returned to class to develop the film and make contact sheets. 

When my instructor looked at mine, she stopped dead in her tracks and said, “Oh my God, have you ever seen the work of Walker Evans?” I replied, “I have no idea who he is.” She said, “You should go look him up right now.” That was the beginning of everything.

My work is somewhat like Walker Evans’s, though not really. I’m drawn to structure and purity without people involved, so my photographs don’t contain people. I’m very interested in layers-reflections, one building superimposed on another, or the intricate layering of structures in the subway. I’m fascinated by those relationships, and that’s what I photograph.

For most of my work, I use a four-by-five large-format camera. It allows me to correct perspective and to open and close the shutter multiple times on the same sheet of film, ensuring that no people appear in the final image. I would then go to my wet darkroom and use Ansel Adams developing method to develop and print. For the subways serious I used to photograph at one o’clock in the morning, when there were very few people in the subways anyway. 

After a point I stop wet darkroom work and began my journey into digital photography and printing. I now shoot with my 6 x 7 Swiss Arca view camera with a phone one IQ 150 which has 150 megapixels which allows me to alter and manipulate the image. Recently I have started to expand my subject matter. I am now shooting a series of Highways such as Under_BB_Manhattan. I am continuing this project both in NYC and across the region.

Another project which is very personal to me titled R.I.P. which is very personnel to me! Emotions of watching my wife slowly pass away for bone cancer I started this exploration of the state between life and death in order to explore the beauty of this in between state. My interest in this subject is a result of my wife’s death due to Bone Cancer. And watching her slowly die.

I am sure at some point I will be finished with this project and will return to my much more architectural urban focus. I have recently been fortunate to have multiple shows of my work both international and locally. It is a clear delight to have my work accepted into gallery shows.
