Alfredo Bucay Atri
Alfredo Bucay Atri’s artistic research unfolds through abstraction as a living and sensorial language, where painting becomes a space for emotional resonance and symbolic transformation. Rather than representing the visible world, the artist constructs layered visual fields in which memory, tension, luminosity, and gesture emerge as material presence. His compositions exist as thresholds suspended between structure and dissolution, density and light, inviting viewers into a contemplative and immersive encounter.

Working through dynamic chromatic contrasts and fragmented forms, Bucay Atri translates interior states into painterly experiences that resist fixed interpretation. Each canvas activates perception rather than offering resolution, echoing Kandinsky’s conviction that art reveals what cannot always be seen. In this way, abstraction becomes both mirror and portal: a space where the intangible takes shape and personal narratives surface through color and rhythm.

Born in Mexico City in 1965, Alfredo Bucay Atri developed a multidisciplinary path that bridges intuitive gesture with formal research. He studied at the Academia de San Carlos (UNAM), completing the seminar Painting and Its Aesthetic Composition under Leticia Arcos Romero in 2024. His artistic formation also includes the master workshop Matter and Spirit with José Luis Bustamante in Tepoztlán (2023) and critical contemporary art studies with curator Gonzalo Ortega (2020–2021). Earlier training at Casa Lamm (2018–2019), focused on figurative and traditional techniques, continues to inform the structural balance present in his abstract language.

A defining moment in his trajectory occurred in 2018 with the establishment of his first studio in Tepoztlán, Morelos. Immersed in a landscape rich in natural and symbolic energy, he developed the series Absolutamente Tepoztlán, consolidating a personal vocabulary rooted in materiality, mysticism, and spatial perception. After relocating his practice to Mexico City, he continued his research from independent studios at Casa Pixán and La Laguna, expanding his exploration of layered surfaces, chromatic tension, and experiential abstraction.

Today, Bucay Atri maintains his studio and exhibition space at Casa Maiko in Mexico City, where his practice continues to evolve around threshold spaces, sensory experimentation, and the transformative potential of color. Positioned within a contemporary dialogue on abstraction as experiential space, his work invites viewers to inhabit painting not as an image to decode, but as an experience to feel.
