“My name is Anna di Gaeta, and I am a Roman photographer. I earned a degree in Law, but my true passions have always been languages and photography. So, I began studying foreign languages, earning a degree in Interpreting and Translation in Spanish, French, English, and German, becoming an interpreter and translator. This allowed me to travel and nurture my passion for discovering new countries and cultures. At the same time, I started playing with my camera again, loving the idea of revealing places and people through new eyes and perspectives”.

Since I was a child, photography has been a magical way for me to capture the world as I see it or sometimes as I imagine it. It was also thanks to my father, who gave me my first camera for my 10th birthday, that I embarked on this adventure into a world between reality and imagination. This journey translated, just a few years ago, into my personal project “BALLET MEETS STREET. Two sides of a just one heart”, divided into two projects: “CITIES ON POINTES. The city on tiptoes” and “BALLET MEETS STREET ART. A love story between dance and street art.”

“CITIES ON POINTES. The city on tiptoes” explores the Eternal City en pointe, combined with street photography to make each shot unique. Life itself becomes an accomplice, surprising us with magical light at sunset after a cloudy rainy day, capable of transforming a square into a timeless open air stage, or with a child stopping to admire, enchanted, the ballerina who stepped out of The Nutcracker tale, unknowingly becoming the protagonist himself of that fleeting moment captured by the lens. This project Amis to be boundless, starting from my beloved Rome, the city where I was born and that I call Home, to explore other beautiful Italian and European cities.

Through this project, I also wish to inspire people who, during difficult times, may find themselves unknowingly trapped within themselves. I hope to move them with my shots, awakening them even if just for a brief moment, and encouraging them to break free from their inner confines, to overcome mental barriers that can sometimes feel more insurmountable than geographical ones. Sometimes, all it takes is one step, perhaps a step en pointe, to rediscover oneself, beyond one’s inner state, rediscover one’s city, and the rest of the world, and even hidden corners within oneself. Sometimes, a single step is enough to discover a world, be it our own or the one outside us.

Behind this project lies another imprint from my childhood: classical dance. However, following an injury, I had to stop, though I never truly abandoned it. Somehow, I felt the need to preserve its poetry within me until I found a way to express it through my photographic project.

“BALLET MEETS STREET ART. A love story between dance and street art” is a project that seeks to go beyond merely showcasing images of ballerinas in front of graffiti and murals. It tells a love story between two antithetical worlds connected by their passion for art. This passion transforms their differences into a loving dialogue made of contrasts, a metaphor that could translate into today’s global social reality, where contrasts and differences can coexist thanks to shared values rather than being demonized.

Classical dance is often considered an art far removed from the daily life of most people, a rigid and formal art. For this reason, I wanted to bring it to the stage of the streets, to bring it closer to people and show that dance, like any true form of art, is made of soul and passion. It is precisely this passion that drives its extreme discipline, which I try to translate in my shots into harmony and grace. I aim to capture its soul through photography while building a dialogue between these art forms that are deeply significant to me.

“BALLET MEETS STREET. Two Sides of a Just One Heart” is a project conceived with the idea of evolving over time into a series of photographic books. The first volume would be dedicated to Rome, followed by subsequent volumes, each focusing on a European city, and eventually, perhaps one day, crossing the ocean. Whatever its destiny or how it evolves, the essence of this project is to tell a love story between two antithetical worlds: the grace of dance and the captivating roughness of the city or metropolis. It is their differences that give strength and vitality to their love, and together they create a unique and magical Wonderland.
