Bastian Oldhouse
Bastian Oldhouse’s artistic trajectory unfolds as a decisive return, a conscious reclaiming of painting after decades devoted to professional and personal responsibilities. Born in 1948 and raised bilingually in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, Oldhouse began painting at the age of fourteen, revealing an early inclination toward visual expression. Although his aspiration to train as a graphic designer was not realized, his formation as a civil engineering draughtsman provided him with a structural sensitivity that would later resurface in his artistic language.

After military service and academic studies, Oldhouse dedicated three intensive years to painting before temporarily setting aside his artistic pursuit to focus on family life and his professional career. Yet the commitment to return to art remained a silent promise, one ultimately fulfilled on his sixtieth birthday. From 2008 onward, he re-entered the artistic field with remarkable intensity, producing more than 600 works, primarily large-scale paintings, alongside video productions and installations.

Oldhouse’s work reflects both the discipline of technical precision and the urgency of existential inquiry. His compositions are characterized by a tension between structural clarity and expressive depth, suggesting a practice shaped by life experience rather than academic continuity. The act of painting becomes not merely aesthetic exploration but a reaffirmation of voice, a statement of presence after years of postponement.

Beyond the visual arts, Oldhouse engages critically with contemporary society through writing. He contributes articles to local and national press and, in 2021, published his first book in German, Salvation – ist die Menschheit zu retten?. Defined as a “realoman,” the book interweaves fiction, reality, and dystopia, confronting global anxieties without adherence to politically convenient narratives. Much like his visual practice, the text navigates between speculation and critique, questioning humanity’s trajectory in an era of environmental and social instability.

Bastian Oldhouse’s artistic journey embodies the idea of return not as nostalgia, but as renewal. His work stands as a testament to persistence, to the enduring necessity of creative expression as both personal reckoning and cultural reflection.
