Beast
Since 2009, the urban artist known as Beast has created over 200 installations in more than 40 cities across Europe, the United States, and Japan. Known for transforming urban environments into “open-air galleries”, Beast’s work has evolved from small satirical mashups to monumental murals that breathe new life into abandoned spaces. Through his art, he encourages viewers to reflect, question, and connect with their shared histories.

In the early stages of his career, Beast focused on social and political commentary. His signature pieces featured framed mashups of influential figures, placed freely in public spaces with a distinctly provocative tone. Over time, his artistic practice expanded in scale and depth, moving toward large-format posters that replaced traditional advertisements on city walls, as well as enormous murals adorning neglected buildings in rural areas.
At the heart of Beast’s latest work lies a profound engagement with history. His most recent series involves portraying historical figures on the crumbling walls of deserted towns. The process is intricate and deliberate: the wall is first photographed and then digitally overlaid with a selected portrait. The resulting image is printed and installed, perfectly aligned with the textures and scars of the wall beneath. The effect is haunting-these figures appear to emerge from the past, as if still present among us, whispering reminders of their lessons.

Beast’s creative philosophy stems from a deeply personal relationship with the photographic archive. “I’ve never viewed the archive as a museum or a closed chapter”, he explains. “To me, it’s a living document. My job is to go in there, pick up the stories, understand why they meant what they meant, and then bring that to life in a new way-or a way that celebrates it”.
His inspiration often draws on historical reflection, with one notable quote by American historian Howard Zinn providing a thematic backbone to his current work:”If you don’t know history, it is as if you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of checking up on it”.

Beast’s installations are more than visual spectacles, they are acts of cultural memory. By placing powerful imagery in public spaces, he shifts the narrative from passive consumption in museums to active engagement in everyday life. These open-air interventions create moments of pause, fostering dialogue across social and political divides and building trust through shared experience. In a time when cities are often seen as fractured and impersonal, Beast’s work reminds us that public space can and should be a site of connection, reflection, and transformation.
