Carrie Martin
Hi, I am Carrie Martin, an oil painter based in Denver, Colorado. My work centres around the colorful American West, where I capture vibrant landscapes, big sky and the exuberant enjoyment of the Rocky Mountain lifestyle. I enjoy telling amazing stories about places that capture people’s interest by connecting with their imagination through inspiration, and mastery of technique and color.
I have a deep connection to the wild places of the American West. Many of these places are epitomized in the grandeur that is Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West. I also have a driving desire to keep wild places wild, while sharing the fragile beauty of secret places with others, also thrilled by untamed beauty.”

My paintings, showcasing the beauty of Western American, encompass a broader interpretation of “Life in the West” than more traditional paintings of the genre that focus more on ranches, cattle and cowboy life.
I also enjoy telling stories in urban Colorado settings like the historic Barnum neighbourhood, once owned by circus magnate P.T. Barnum. My painting, Sunset Circus, Barnum Neighborhood, Denver, has an elephant hiding in the yard in plain sight (directly above my signature), escaping the cage made by the long shadows of the picket fence.
My work reflects my delight in the beauty of a particular place or scene. Or a story that can’t effectively be told on a single canvas, representing a single frame, of our 24 frames-per-second lives. I apply electric colors, vivid jewel-like tones, to everyday scenes that flash before our eyes and then are gone in an instant. Like an emotional flashbulb capturing a single, dramatic frame, or series of frames.
Sometimes my storytelling requires multiple canvases, such as a diptych – two paintings always shown and purchased together that tell a single story. Or triptych – three paintings that tell a single story.

Other times, I use a series of paintings to tell a story, which can be exhibited and purchased separately, without requiring the other paintings to tell the story, like my paintings, Electric Backyard – Sun Tea, Electric Backyard – Crows, and Electric Backyard – Daisies. Any of these three paintings would look wonderful as a solo selection on a wall, or make a great grouping as two or all three paintings. (Please insert my paintings, Electric Backyard – Sun Tea (1 of 3), Electric Backyard – Crows (2 of 3), and Electric Backyard – Daisies (3 of 3) after the paragraph in black, above. Thank you.)
I started my painting career in October of 2021, having spent 25+ years as a graphic designer and illustrator. I am a subject matter expert in the recognized industry-standard digital studio, Adobe Creative Suite. I had many years of experience in observing shadow, light and color, translating my vision to paper, utilizing a computer screen, mouse and pixels, instead of canvas, brush and paint.
Any artist, digital or analog, must develop an ability to see light, shadow and color, as well as develop the technical ability to translate what they see into an artistic interpretation of the subject matter. My years spent as an illustrator served me well as I transitioned to a full-time oil painter.
As a professional, in-demand digital artist, I longed for a time when I would be able to transition from a digital artist whose hands never got dirty, only connecting with the artwork virtually – to a time when I could employ a handheld brush dunked into a pile of paint. I craved the tactile delight of dragging the paint-soaked brush across a tangible, as opposed to virtual, canvas.

And subsequently, my success came immediately after transitioning to a full-time fine artist in October 2021. I was delighted when my first oil painting was selected for a juried exhibit! I was more delighted to learn that my painting won the Mayor’s Choice Award in the exhibition at 40West Art gallery in Denver.
I was also chosen to participate in the Borders Venice International Art Fair 2025: FUTURE LANDSCAPES, happening July 25 – August 8. This biennial exhibit focuses on the concept of “borders”, between the soul and the body, the human being and the urban space, the city and the ground. This exhibit will take place at the historical Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice, Italy.
I’m looking forward to attending this exciting international opportunity in Venice, Italy later this summer. I am grateful to all my collectors and fans, and look forward to making new connections, leading to new opportunities at all the fabulous places my paintings take me, during the remainder of 2025. Color me grateful!
