Elsabe O’Donovan (Elsaab) is a contemporary South African artist who recently transitioned to a full-time art practice. Recognised as one of the most promising emerging artists in the country, she was nominated for the 2023 Watch List by Art.co.za, a leading South African online magazine. Elsabe holds a BA (Ed) Fine Arts degree from the University of Pretoria and is the founder of the Open Window (www.openwindow.co.za), a leading South African art, design and film school.

Her studio is located in the picturesque town of Knysna on the Garden Route of the Western Cape. Raised on a Free State farm alongside her architect father, Elsabe was immersed in the world of conceptualization from an early age. Her early artistic explorations involved experimenting with concrete casting using sand moulds, and she expressed herself in various two- and three-dimensional art forms.

After completing her art degree, Elsabe embarked on a teaching career, which led her to run art classes in her garage. These classes attract students from all walks of life working in diverse art forms. In 1994, she founded Open Window by launching a one-year certificate program in Art and Design. Open Window is now a recognised and trendsetting tertiary leader offering degrees in technology-driven art and design fields. Elsabe’s work seamlessly bridges traditional and digital art. She works in media such as watercolours, acrylics, charcoal, and mixed media while also enjoying the flexibility of her digital studio during her travels.

Her creative process often begins with capturing photographic images of her surroundings, translating them into imaginative, conceptual visuals or metaphors, creating a new, subliminal world. When I look around me, I see art moments all the time. A new reality forms within the reality; the invisible becomes visible, a conflict between what we see and what we don’t see. Nature sometimes becomes esoteric, and the obscure becomes clear.

“I am fascinated by our peculiar existence on planet Earth, its lyrical state, the underlying organic structures of the natural world, the divine precision that lives within pseudo chaos, and time versus timelessness. I create intuitively, answering to the quest for authenticity while acknowledging the co-incidental. By tapping into my subconscious, the physical world around me often transforms into archetypal shapes, symbols or metaphors. For me, art is self-expression channelled through the universe, which, in return, reveals art to the artist.

The underlying truth, irony, and inherent meaning of the world around us become visible when the artist is open to an uninterrupted, free-flowing process where visual stimuli become merely the connection point for a greater reality. The art process happens through us, not because of us. I produce art by transitioning between different media, between traditional and digital art. The process often starts with manipulating my photos, which either remain digital or become a pre-sketch for a watercolour or acrylic painting-or vice versa. I enjoy the freedom to work in different genres, styles, and mediums and believe that art can only become truthful when it has no boundaries.”

The artist is now working on a Shift IA Project, an innovative exploration of immersive art that blends two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces to create a captivating multi-media experience, transforming conventional imagery into a fluid, interactive journey by integrating dynamic light, movement, and sound effects. Elsabe is now inviting volunteers to collaborate on her project to craft a seamless transition between visual and sensory realms, enhancing the viewer’s engagement and perception.
