Felipe Alarcón Echenique

Felipe Alarcón Echenique is a contemporary Cuban artist currently based in Madrid, Spain. His multifaceted practice encompasses painting, printmaking, drawing, and writing. As a distinguished member of VEGAP and the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors of Madrid, Alarcón also serves as the President of the Ibero-American Creators Association (ACI).

“I attempt to capture contemporary chaos, the past, present, and future of various events within a two-dimensional plane, providing an overlay of figures and images of different hierarchical orders.”

Born in Havana on March 21, 1966, Alarcón began his formal artistic education at the prestigious “San Alejandro” Academy of Fine Arts. In 1987, he completed his studies in Art Education and went on to teach Visual Arts from 1987 to 1995 in both Primary and Basic Secondary Education. Furthering his education, Alarcón studied at the José Varona Higher Institute of Art between 1995 and 1998, where he pursued a degree in Artistic Education. His early career included running a studio workshop at C/Obispo in Havana from 1996 to 1997, a period that significantly shaped his artistic development.

“I am a Cuban-Hispanic painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, whose works have been exhibited in Costa Rica, Spain, Peru, Germany, France, the United States, and Italy. My artistic process draws from ‘chronicles of everyday life’; I am interested in reflecting on the chaos of modern life and representing different universes through micro-worlds to create parallels. My figurative compositions are made using mixed techniques and recycled materials”.

Exploring the life and work of Felipe Alarcón Echenique involves reflecting on the vicissitudes of fate, the fluctuations of genes, and the mutual cultural influences between America and Europe; and, of course, it involves discussing the biological and pluricultural mestizaje that continues and will continue to occur in the world.

The exchange of genes and memes is key to our survival. This mobility, which has characterized our species since the beginning, driven by chance and necessity, creativity and curiosity, has been our banner. A banner is a symbol that means something to someone. Dissatisfaction is a sign of humanity in general and of restless minds in particular. This is the case with Felipe Alarcón; his native Cuba felt too small for his aspirations, and he had to fly away to build, with his restless hands and hyperactive mind, another destiny, another path, another place to dream and to continue growing both personally and artistically. Poets, like Vallejo in the poem with which we began these reflections.

Today, Alarcón continues to explore and express his unique vision through his diverse artistic endeavours, contributing to the vibrant cultural landscape of both Cuba and Spain.
