In Gabriel Broady’s work, image and text coexist. The short lines from his poems give viewers the ability to closely imagine what his thoughts were in whatever work of art he has created. The text within his work grants people further insight of what religious influences or beliefs he possesses. His work expresses my inner-thoughts and fascinations. He is experimenting with ways to better analytically reveal these many topics and thoughts. His words, drawings and paintings are never intended to be the same as they begin. They change in the process of making and develop another way of thought.

He works hard to narrow down his many beliefs and thoughts by developing relations between his words and imagery. The development of each piece begins from either thumbnail sketches or poems. In the transition of making his drawing into a painting, he began with a grisaille under painting using black and white acrylic paint, a traditional technique used by Jacques-Louis David and others. After the full black and white painting is complete, then he applies multiple layers of glaze, so that layers of hues are added onto the canvas. This technique allows him to capture a further understanding of light to dark within his paintings.

However, within printmaking he combines both professional experience of both Printmaking and Painting, such as the combination of watercolor, lino-cut and monotype prints, ranging from both negative and positive prints. Abstract art, minimal modern art allows him to express variations in hand-drawn designs. Mixed-media is a fulfilling medium that allows him to explore various ways in creativity. Alike mathematics, art seems like an universal language; but it varies through opinion and perception. Art is all about the discovery of one’s truth.

He has recently become aware of other artists exposing their truth to the world. Historically established artists such as Henry Tanner and Charles White show African Americans as civilized and not savage; and a contemporary artist like Kerry James Marshall using the color, black, to create totally black figures as a rhetorical device within his paintings. The color of African Americans is maximized to the extreme that all people of this ethnicity are considered black; because of this, even now, the color, black, is still the identity for all African Americans in spite of the complexion of their shins are not black.

There are many variations of flesh tone within the many races or ethnicities of the world; one color could never symbolize nor identify the identity of an entire race of humans. For instance, the color, white, is not the correct hue which identifies all Caucasians. The message that he gains from these artists is that art can never cease to be less than it appears to be. He sees that there is no wrong or right, but only the judgment of an individual. In his art work, he experiments many methods and approaches to reveal to the world his truth.
