Kyla Gu

Kyla Gu is a London-based digital and transmedia artist with a strong background in visual communication. Originally from Guangzhou, China, she has developed a deep foundation in artistic principles, constantly pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling and artistic expression. Kyla’s work transcends traditional design, engaging in innovative digital art practices that blend creative coding, motion graphics, and immersive experiences to craft captivating and thought-provoking narratives. Throughout her artistic journey, she honed her craft by exploring the intersection of art intervention and transmedia expression. Her practice reflects a profound curiosity for digital art forms, including generative art, interactive installations, and experimental visuals. Her practice as a digital and transmedia artist is an ongoing exploration of how art can intersect with technology, creating immersive experiences that transcend the traditional boundaries of visual communication. Through a deep engagement with creative coding, motion, and generative art, she explores the possibilities of dynamic and interactive visual narratives that invite audiences to participate and connect on multiple levels. The interplay between typography, graphics, color, and motion is central to her work, but her focus extends beyond design into the realm of artistic intervention. She aims to create experiences that are not only visually compelling but also conceptually rich, provoking thought and emotion through innovative, technology-driven mediums. By blending these elements with the principles of transmedia storytelling, she crafts layered, immersive experiences that evoke a sense of wonder, curiosity, and deep engagement. She believes that digital art is a powerful tool for storytelling, capable of creating connections and conveying complex ideas in ways that resonate deeply with contemporary audiences. Her work seeks to harness that power, pushing the limits of what is possible and forging new paths in the ever-evolving landscape of art and technology.

Although many people already know about NFTs, few participate and trust in them. She can’t dispel doubts all at once, so her brand “deified” speculates on a situation around 2032. In this future scenario, NFTs and related technologies have already been integrated into everyday life. People begin to believe in NFTs as a form of faith, forming organizations that worship them, believing that NFTs will become a new societal rule, allowing people to do everything in the digital world. By using the brand image to create a cult that exists in the future, she aims to arouse curiosity and prompt people to think about how far NFTs can go. What she has created is a sense of absurdity.

Her series of posters speculates on a new world that is emerging. More and more people are beginning to believe in the power of digital technology and are forming organizations that worship it as a new religion. They believe that digital technology will soon become the dominant force in society, allowing people to do everything in the digital world and even upload their entire existence into the metaverse. In this new world, animals, plants, and even human organs are transformed into 2D data and exist solely as virtual entities. Through her posters, she creates a sense of absurdity, highlighting the strange and unsettling nature of this new reality.

Introduction of Type Time
This experimental typography project explores the relationship between time and typography in the fifth dimension, where time is spatial rather than linear. By simulating a clockโ€™s hour-hand movement on the Jiugongge grid, a structure used for Chinese characters, she created unique text shapes. To examine how text might function in this dimension, she developed a translator tool. When Chinese characters are input, it generates a โ€œtype timeโ€ font based on project rules, which gradually fades, reflecting the fluid and dynamic nature of this conceptual space.

Introduction of Collapsing Kaleidoscope
The meta-universe is influencing our world. The 3-dimensional space is collapsing and reforming. As city observers, they extract the timeline as a kaleidoscope, inserting a seed of Bok Choy into the unstable, disordered space of Shanghai to see how it can grow and reflect the cityscape. Bok Choy breaks the rules that sound cannot travel in a vacuum, propagating a series of sound waves carrying messages from the city itself.
