Lucas Shakespere was born in Wakefield and grew up in Leeds. Thanks to a scholarship, she attended a private school, as her family had limited means, and she spent the first ten years of his life on Burley Road in Leeds, a working-class area of tarmac and dust. At age 11, she moved to Highwood Court, leaving Burley Road behind, an upheaval that left her mute for a decade; words felt like blocks of wood in his throat, and she rarely spoke. Writing became her means of expression, and during her teenage years, reading and writing became the center of her life outside of school. Her academic efforts paid off, earning her four A’s at A-level, which led her to university.

She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1994 and took a year off to live at home and recover. In 1995, she returned to finish her degree. By then, her friends had graduated, so she shared a student flat with some international students, and it turned out to be the best year of her life. Their vibrant personalities helped her find her footing, and suddenly, she felt she could speak freely again. The transformation was quick, and she was genuinely happy. She graduated with an Agrotat degree and returned to Leeds, deciding to leave academia. She didn’t want to live in an academic bubble, so she moved into her own flat on Queenswood Drive in Leeds. For the next 20 years, she embraced a bohemian lifestyle within Leeds’ underground art scene.

Her love of art began before she set off traveling, back when she rented a small studio space in Wakefield and went there every night to work on canvases. Although those canvases have since been lost, her passion for working with images remains strong. Now, she can only create with collage, as her creative energy for original work was deeply exhausted during her time in Leeds. Just a few months ago, she discovered photography, and with the addition of his FX pedal, she feels she can finally express her creativity in a beautiful way. In 2014, she published Luke Book and Survivors on Lulu.com; Survivors was written while she was in Germany.

She lives in Featherstone, which is a small working-class town in the North of England. Her family and her neighbors are all citizens, and they are proud and free. She feels she can’t leave her roots behind in her work and has set about documenting the life and environment of Everyman The Citizen to show that every single life on this planet is important.

She has made some preliminary photographs of the town and the municipal park, which is called Purston Park. The effects she has used make the images captivating, as Everyman The Citizen inhabits a proud and passionate world and loves these streets like a lover. She wanted to bring that sentiment out in her photography, but the effects she uses are a signature because her photographs are unmelodramatic; thus, the effects reveal the soul of the piece.
