Maryam Nazari

Maryam Nazari is a multidisciplinary artist whose work weaves together threads of memory, identity, and cultural narrative. Born in Tehran and currently based in London, her practice spans performance art, sound design, video, installation, and curatorial work. Nazari’s voice is rooted in the personal and the political, and her art serves as a bridge between her Iranian heritage and contemporary global discourse.

Nazari describes her artistic journey as a continuous act of translation-between geographies, bodies, and histories. Her works often explore the tensions between private experience and public performance, drawing from the dualities she witnessed growing up in Iran. Through performance and multimedia art, she delves into silenced narratives and transforms them into immersive sensory encounters that challenge her audiences.

At the core of her creative process is sound. With an early background in classical music and instruments like the Tombak, Tar, and cello, she developed a sensitivity to time and rhythm that now shapes the structure of her performances. In Nazari’s work, sound functions as both a narrative guide and a destabilizing force, breaking linear expectations and allowing for abstraction, improvisation, and intimate reflection.

Nazari’s impact reaches far beyond national borders. After completing her Master’s in Performance Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins, she embarked on a multidisciplinary career that includes not only the creation of original artworks but also curating major exhibitions and advising on international artistic collaborations. Her work has been featured in prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, and she continues to engage audiences across Europe, North America, and Asia.

A hallmark of Nazari’s approach is her use of the body-not as a symbol, but as a question. Her performances often place the human or animal form at the center of inquiry, confronting audiences with visceral expressions of resistance, sacrifice, and storytelling. Themes of war, womanhood, and cultural memory emerge not as fixed narratives, but as layered experiences open to interpretation.

Currently pursuing a practice-based PhD at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Nazari is deepening her investigation into the role of Persian carpets in cultural storytelling. Her research, titled “Persian Carpet as a Site for Storytelling, Memory, and Artistic Interpretation,” continues her broader artistic inquiry into how cultural artifacts carry histories, traumas, and identities.

Maryam Nazari’s work is neither protest nor proclamation. It is a proposal-a poetic offering in the face of imposed silence. Through deeply immersive and structurally innovative pieces, she invites audiences to listen, feel, and reflect. In the interstices of tradition and transformation, private memory and public voice, her art finds its powerful, resonant form.
