The First 24/7 Art Gallery in the World, Bionantism, and More – The Vision of Mihai Ionescu
Mihai Ionescu is a Romanian visual artist, curator, and cultural innovator whose work spans across painting, theory, and artistic curation. With a career rooted in both creation and promotion, Ionescu has built one of the most impactful artistic platforms in Eastern Europe. In 2009, he founded Tablouri de Vis, which quickly became Romania’s largest art website, hosting tens of thousands of artworks and featuring thousands of contemporary artists. The platform remains a vital hub for the Romanian visual arts scene.
Beyond his work in the digital realm, Ionescu is also known for his contributions to cultural media. In 2015, he hosted and produced Zoom Cultural, a nationally broadcasted TV show that ran for a year and introduced the public to a wide array of emerging and established artists. Each week, Ionescu highlighted an artist, ran interactive quizzes, and shared thought-provoking insights about contemporary art.
As a practicing painter, Ionescu holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in the same field.

His artistic vision is both experimental and concept-driven, seeking to explore the intersections between technology, biology, and structural design. He is the founder and theorist behind the theme of Bionantism, a distinctive artistic direction first defined around 2024. Bionantism reflects an innovative fusion between nature and technology – integrating mechanical elements into organic environments without resorting to dystopian, fantastical, or utopian imagery. Instead, it proposes a harmonious relationship between bios and tech, offering a new and balanced lens through which the future of visual art can be imagined.
This theme has already resonated with and been adopted by a growing number of contemporary artists, drawn to its authenticity, coherence, and creative freedom. Unlike Steampunk, Bionantism avoids the nostalgic aesthetics of the Victorian era and the overuse of gears, steam, and vintage machinery. Unlike Fantasy, it steers clear of mythical creatures, magical settings, or heroic narratives. And unlike Surrealism, Bionantism is grounded in a sense of logical structure and visual clarity, favoring believable, almost plausible scenarios over dreamlike abstraction. It stands on its own – as a fresh and meaningful approach to rethinking our relationship with both nature and innovation.

Mihai Ionescu is also the creator and curator of the acclaimed exhibition series Tablouri de Vis, which between 2010 and 2020 held large-scale shows at the Romanian Parliament, showcasing the talent of diverse contemporary artists and building bridges between institutional space and artistic expression. Alongside these exhibitions, he launched charitable campaigns such as “LicitArta pentru viață” (“AuctionArt for Life”), blending social causes with creative outreach and engaging the public in new ways of supporting both art and humanitarian initiatives. In November 2024, Mihai Ionescu opened what is accepted to be the first non-stop art gallery in the world, located in central Bucharest. This visionary space operates 24/7 and invites visitors into a curated, dream-like world at any hour of the day or night. The gallery, which bears the same name as his platform Tablouri de Vis by Mihai Ionescu, not only features works in the style of Bionantism but also embraces a wide range of artistic expressions, offering a platform for varied genres and voices, and making contemporary art more accessible than ever.

Beyond its permanent exhibition, the gallery hosts a rich program of events – from solo and group exhibitions to book launches, live recitals, and cultural evenings – transforming the space into a living organism of creativity and dialogue. It has quickly become a hub for artists, thinkers, and art lovers alike, offering an open door to inspiration at any moment, regardless of the hour.
Through his multifaceted career – spanning traditional painting, curatorial innovation, media presence, and artistic theory – Mihai Ionescu continues to redefine the role of the artist in modern society. His paintings are part of numerous private and public collections, including museums and galleries in Romania and abroad, reflecting the wide appreciation of his unique visual language. His works and initiatives challenge the conventional limits of time, space, and genre, inviting viewers into a realm where imagination and structure coexist in a delicate and visionary balance.
