Mustafa Abelseed

Abelseed is a self-taught American artist based in New Jersey, USA. Born in 1962, he has sold over 900 paintings to private collectors, museums, and institutions worldwide between 1984 and 2008. His artistic journey has taken him across the globe, having lived and worked in England, the UAE, Spain, Canada, and France. Throughout his career, he has developed a distinct visual language that continues to captivate audiences internationally.

His work has been featured multiple times-both on the cover and inside-by Décharge, a renowned poetry magazine based in Paris. He has been selected for future representation by Park West International Galleries and was invited by the Art Institute of Chicago to participate in upcoming exhibitions. After his London show in 1981, Abelseed moved to New York City and established his studio in Uptown Manhattan, where he exhibited in several galleries, including Word Lowrance Art Gallery, Wears for Art, and Savaco Gallery. He went on to sell hundreds of works to collectors and organizations, including Citibank Group, Adidas Design Corp., and the Abdul Raouf H. Khalil Museum in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Abelseed’s artwork is vibrant, emotionally resonant, and full of life. He possesses a sharp eye that enables him to deconstruct realistic human features and reimagine them in unique forms. These reconstructions are not merely aesthetic-they offer deep insights into human nature, as uncovered through his creative process. His reinterpretation of the human figure transcends conventional portraiture, capturing both psychological depth and spiritual essence.

A defining feature of his work is his bold use of bright colors, particularly in pieces that explore the human condition. Though he acknowledges being more confident with drawing than painting, he uses heavy layers of paint to conceal what he refers to as his “imagined” shortcomings. The result is a dynamic, flamboyant visual style that leaves a lasting impression on viewers long after they leave the gallery space.

Today, Abelseed remains active in his studio in Jersey City, New Jersey. He describes his work as a “subtle, restless search in the inner world of the human creature,” aiming to reveal the psychological and spiritual challenges modern individuals face. He believes his art contributes to healing the feelings of meaninglessness and spiritual poverty that plague contemporary life. His conviction is rooted in the belief that the inner world of a human being is far deeper and more expansive than the outer one.

To Abelseed, color is a sense and line represents determination. Through a joyful, intuitive process, he combines both to construct artworks filled with spirit and intent. His overarching message is one of empowerment: to awaken a new inner strength through art, in a time when such expression is in danger of losing its true meaning.
