Pilar Catalán Lazáro
Pilar Catalán‘s itinerary is the result of a comprehensive training process in the fields of painting, graphic techniques (printmaking/digital graphics), and video art, which began at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid and subsequently developed into a mixed-media process. Professionally, she has participated in solo and group exhibitions, shows, and events in the fields of painting, graphics, and video art, with numerous exhibitions to her credit. She has participated in both national and international Contemporary Art Fairs.
“I have always resisted measuring time and its content, knowing that each person has their own allotted time, and we can only fill it to a certain extent. The connection between the two is the axiom that aims to reinforce personality, our own humanity – a humanity that, in the 21st century, is subordinated to the search for place, message, and a new subject in artistic practice.”

Her artistic gesture has gone through different stages – expressionist, minimalist, pop-art – references that have guided her path towards new image technologies, making the computer her studio and artistic laboratory. This initiated a conceptual journey based on serial and combinatorial processes, which have led to conceptual ruptures in her work, particularly in digital graphics. Pilar Catalán’s work consists of a collection of modular images that generate a personal “visual alphabet” exhibited on various mediums, ranging from murals to audiovisual installations.

In her “attempt to move beyond the pendulum,” beyond binary oppositions, Pilar Catalán seems to seek to subvert the logocentric order through strategies of form generation that do not neatly fit into traditional categories. In doing so, she may find a way to liberate herself from the oppressive yoke of patriarchy. The word “logos,” in Greek, means “word,” but also “reason.” For Derrida, the emphasis on rationality has facilitated male dominance over women. If a modular network is a structure in which a series of identical or similar figures are related, this structure – usually geometric – becomes, in Catalán’s hands, elastic, fluid, liquid, flexible, and feminine. In her murals and audiovisuals, the derivation of discrete modular structures results from symmetry and repetition, but note that in Catalán’s work, these structures are conducive to the diversity and proliferation of forms, referring to a permanent and plural movement rather than to the rigidity of structure.

Pilar Catalán describes her audiovisuals as a symbolic field linked to alphabets and ideograms, based on synesthetic experiences, which serve only as a pretext to show a virtual space where the movement of signs in search of new paradigms is signified. The goal is to highlight the complexity of the message and the openness to other models through new tools, to emphasize concepts such as rights, equality, sisterhood, diversity, plurality, multiplicity, heterogeneity, and the UNIVERSAL.
