Sándor Barics

Since 1997, Barics has been artistically fascinated with Aerial Photography of Mars and dedicated a large part of their artistic work to the research of the Red Planet. He spent much of his childhood investigating the world of elements with a simple chemistry set and used it to create elaborate science fair projects. Insatiable curiosity and a deep love of learning created bridges between seemingly unrelated disciplines. As a result, he has devoted his life to an intuitive examination of properties that overlap from discipline to discipline.

He remembers the thrill when reading about Galileo Galilei’s Telescope Invention in a book, he built a with the help of his Father a self-made telescope out of cardboard, this magically connected him with the cosmos, and he can still summon his feelings and fascination as he continues to explore its matter and meaning. Astronomical discoveries have inspired him to use his artwork to make the invisible visible, connecting common threads that flow across various scientific fields to capture and re-imagine what scientists see. Barics uses aerial images created by NASA quite often. Reality is hard and soft. The artist explores the drama of this duality in his colors and the used and found materials for the paintings. He creates geometrically harmonious works by finding a careful balance between the physical roughness of the found materials and the smooth shapes they form.

For Barics the act of taking broken fragments and unifying them into a whole demonstrates art’s potential to remake and reimagine a fractured world. His paintings seem remote from us, and yet they establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence. By applying abstraction, he investigates the dynamics of landscape, including the manipulation of its effects and the limits of spectacle based on our assumptions of what landscape means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination.

“Science and scientific discoveries inspire me, and they quite often fuse into my art. With my paintings, I always just pushed forward myself to create something truly real. I always liked tapping into the Unknown. Abstraction gave me the space to do that. It allows me the full examination of the invisible. I always thought if I just could arrange things in a certain way, I would achieve a masterful composition. Well after all these years of painting, I came close to it on a few occasions, but a masterpiece is still yet to come. But painting is not just about the arrangement.

The finding of the material, the investigation of the shapes, the color, the texture and the perpetual change is like an organic process. Constructing an organism from molecules. Building a code of aesthetic beauty. My paintings are a process of identification. They are derived from external stimuli and the aggregation of real materials. When I am making art, I am in a vacuum reality. All my reflections, impulses and my constant exploring of the human condition are coming through. They manifest themselves in the artworks. This mysterious sum of thoughts and organized material is powerful enough to communicate without relying on words. They tell stories of my heart that sometimes go unanswered, unnoticed, and unappreciated.”
