Selina Sand, a visual artist born in 1980 and based in Helsinki, has been exhibiting actively in recent times, and since 2025 also internationally. Her works have been shown in Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Venice. Inspired by various art forms and styles, including classical art and contemporary abstract art, Sand’s practice consists of painting and drawing with mixed media, especially with the mediums of oil and acrylic paint, and charcoal.

The work of Selina Sand brings attention to the emotional and psychological dimensions of human experience: Sand draws on her background in psychology and psychotherapy to explore the fleeting nature of life. Her work seeks moments of mystery and beauty, combining intuition with structure in an evolving practice that reflects a dialogue between inner landscapes and everyday reality.

For Selina Sand, art is about looking and discovering. She sees painting and drawing as one of the rare areas where one could be completely free in life, as the usual categories, ways of thinking and conceptualising reality give way momentarily. The painting process can be viewed as a space where the perception of reality is enlivened by the momentary collapse of discourses. The artist can find in themselves a certain kind of “holiness”, that surrenders to being a gazer, forgetting about their thoughts. In this state of presence, there is no point in looking for specific storylines for reality. And at the same time, it opens up the possibility of creating new life, for example, in the form of a new picture.

In her figurative work, Sand is interested in examining the movements of the mind through the means of imagination and symbolism. As a subject and a symbol, a figure is already an emotional subject in itself. Poses, gestures and expressions, whether presented realistically or in a suggestive manner, can convey strong feelings and moods. Accessing meaningful, unconscious experiences beyond the rational mind is possible through symbols, which often leads Sand’s work towards surrealistic imagery.

In addition to figure, Selina Sand’s other main interest is color. As well as creating an atmosphere in a painting, color on the surface of a canvas is ultimately a physical mass. In addition to the sense of sight, the mass of color creates a connection with the haptics, the touch. Sand has observed that seeing a rich mass of color on the surface of the canvas may bring forth the desire to touch and feel the painting.
