Interview: Wenqing Gu
Luca Curci talks with Wenqing Gu, a Baltimore-based digital illustrator specialising in digital illustrations.
Wenqing Gu hails from Huai’an, a small city in East China. Her journey from the quiet streets of Huai’an to the vibrant art scene of Baltimore has deeply influenced her artistic vision. As a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Wenqing specializes in digital illustration, creating works that are renowned for their humor, intrigue, and healing qualities. Her art is a celebration of cultural diversity, drawing on her experiences in China and the United States to explore universal human emotions. Wenqing believes in the power of simplicity and childlike joy, infusing her work with a sense of fun and wonder that aims to bring happiness to her audience.

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Wenqing Gu – Art, for me, is a profound language of expression, connection, and self-discovery. It allows me to communicate ideas, emotions, and stories that might otherwise go unspoken. Through art, I can explore the depths of my own experiences and perspectives while creating something that speaks to others, regardless of their background. I see art as a universal bridge that not only crosses cultural boundaries but also encourages a shared experience of vulnerability, joy, or introspection. Each piece I create is like a mirror, reflecting both the world around me and the world within me. Beyond being a form of expression, art is also my journey. It’s a continuous process of earning, experimentation, and growth that keeps me grounded and inspired. My philosophy, “Slow is faster than stuck,” embodies my approach to creativity – reminding me that the process itself is as important as the final piece. In a fast-paced world, art allows me to slow down, explore nuances, and stay present in the moment. To me, art is not only about the finished piece; it’s about the journey, the patience, and the small breakthroughs along the way that make the process so rewarding.
LC – What are you currently working on?
WG – Right now, I’m working on a few projects that explore themes of authenticity and self-expression. For example, I’m developing an illustration series that reflects the hidden parts of ourselves we often shield from others, inspired by my piece Beneath the Masks. I’m also designing products like t-shirts, posters, and mugs to bring playful and thoughtful art into everyday life. And it’s exciting to think about how these products will connect with people globally, blending art with practical, personal items.
LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
WG – I originally came from an accounting background, but in 2021, I decided to follow my heart and fully transition into art and illustration. Growing up between two cultures – China and the U.S. – gave me a unique perspective on universal human emotions and experiences, which I now channel into my work. My journey from a small town to becoming a full-time artist in Baltimore has shaped me profoundly. One pivotal moment was realizing that art could be more than just a passion; it could also be a
career, a way to inspire others, and a path toward empowerment and self-expression.

LC – Among the several techniques you use, which one do you prefer to practice, and which are most compelling for you?
WG – I primarily work in digital illustration, which allows me to experiment with colors, textures, and details in a way that’s fast-paced and flexible. This medium is compelling because it gives me a broad spectrum of creative possibilities and the freedom to refine my ideas without limitations. I also enjoy exploring traditional techniques when I want to slow down and connect more physically with the art. Mixing digital with traditional elements keeps my work fresh and my creative process
exciting.

LC – What do you think about art on social media? Are they turning into the new showcases of contemporary art?
WG – I believe social media has revolutionized how we experience and share art. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow artists like me to reach a global audience instantly and get real-time feedback on my work. While traditional galleries have their place, social media feels like an open gallery where anyone can engage with art, regardless of background or location. It’s powerful and inspiring to see how social media democratizes art, making it accessible and relevant in today’s world.
LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?
WG – When I see my work completed, it brings a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Every completed piece represents hours of dedication, countless revisions, and a journey from concept to final form. I often reflect on what I learned throughout the process – the challenges I overcame, the moments of inspiration, and the surprises along the way. Seeing the finished piece is like witnessing a part of myself brought to life, a tangible expression of something that once existed only in my mind. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the outcome of that journey and know that each piece carries a part of my voice and vision. At the same time, sharing my work with others brings a unique mix of vulnerability and excitement. There’s always the hope that my art will resonate with someone, that it will bring them a moment of joy, reflection, or connection. Art is my way of reaching out, of touching lives in subtle but meaningful ways. Each time I complete a piece, I feel a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude for the ability to create and connect with others through my work. It’s this connection with my audience that truly completes the experience and gives my art its ultimate meaning.
