William Josephs Radford

William Josephs Radford (b. 1998, Marbella, Spain) is a British-Spanish fine art photographer whose conceptually driven work confronts sex, drugs, religion, memory, and mortality. Raised in the isolated countryside of rural Andalucía by British expatriate parents, his bilingual, bicultural upbringing continues to shape the symbolic language at the core of his practice.

Radford graduated with First Class Honours in Fine Art Photography from the University of Gloucestershire in 2021, an occasion he marked by attending his graduation ceremony dressed in black bin bags – a protest against the cost of academic regalia that went viral worldwide and sparked global debate about the commodification of education.

Working almost exclusively with in-camera techniques – long exposures, light painting, colour gels, lens masking, double exposure, and intentional camera movement – Radford builds images that pair aesthetic seduction with unease. Recurring symbols such as condoms, crucifixes, cigarettes, and flowers recur throughout his practice as semiotic devices for exploring gender, addiction, burnout, and existential tension. Key series include Character Building (2019–21), a three-year study of his childhood home in rural Spain; Deflowered (2022), which illuminates floral still lifes using only the light of pornography playing on a phone screen; and Cherry Blossom (2024), a meditation on burnout shot during his years working in hospitality.

Following his father’s death in 2024, Radford began an ongoing trilogy – White Knight, Gradient Loss, and Residual Noise – using photography as a form of grief therapy, progressively relinquishing technical control as a way of visualising mourning. Related chapters, Mourning Routine and Transparent, continue this exploration through sky photography and digitally reconstructed family archives.
