Zaya Ambros

Zaya Ambros is a Slovak born abstract painter currently based in Prague, whose work transforms internal experience into visual form. Her paintings function as visual diaries, capturing fleeting thoughts, emotions, and states of being that resist verbal articulation. Through layered pigments, fluid gestures, and atmospheric color fields, she creates compositions that are at once intimate and open, inviting viewers to explore their own reflections and emotional landscapes.

Her practice is guided by an ongoing inner dialogue. She responds to subtle shifts in perception or emotion, painting moments that linger and demand attention. Each canvas traces a thought or sensation, externalising it through color, texture, and movement. By balancing structure and spontaneity, her work mirrors the tension between control and letting go, a dynamic she considers essential to maintaining honesty and presence in the studio.

Her visual language draws metaphorical parallels between internal states and natural phenomena. Gradients and soft tonal transitions evoke shifting light and memory, while gestural marks introduce rhythm and energy. She is drawn to textures that feel layered, worn, or gently raw, creating surfaces that carry emotional depth. Through these choices, Ambros cultivates moments of recognition and quiet reflection, spaces where viewers may feel seen, reconnect with themselves, or simply pause.

Material exploration plays a central role in her methodology. Beginning with raw, unstretched canvas, she works with acrylics, vinyl-based paints, and powdered pigments, allowing liquid layers to flow, merge, and settle organically. Intuitive interventions provide structure within this fluid process, capturing a balance between intention and chance. Once complete, the works are stretched onto deep frames, enhancing their physical presence and transforming them into immersive visual environments. Working on multiple paintings simultaneously creates a dialogue between canvases, encouraging experimentation and allowing ideas to evolve organically.

Her background in multimedia design informs a strong sensitivity to composition, balance, and visual storytelling, while her self-directed painting practice embraces openness and experimentation. This hybrid foundation enables her to move fluidly between structure and intuition, producing work that feels deliberate yet alive with unpredictability.

Ambros’ work has recently been presented in international group exhibitions and featured in independent art publications, reflecting a growing engagement with contemporary audiences. Across these contexts, her paintings continue to function as invitations, spaces where personal reflection meets shared experience. Through abstraction, she explores painting as a site of introspection and connection, transforming private emotional landscapes into visual environments that resonate beyond the individual.
