Zoltán Bogdán
Zoltan Bogdan’s artistic journey began at the age of 14, when he enrolled in an art school in Pécs to learn jewelry design. This early passion for craftsmanship laid the foundation for his creative career. After graduating, he continued his studies at the prestigious Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, specializing as an industrial and craft designer. Upon completing his degree, Zoltan stayed on at the university as an assistant while simultaneously working as a freelance designer, honing his skills and exploring new creative avenues.

However, Zoltan describes a long period in his career as creatively unfulfilling. “The whole “playing creative game” started again in 2018, when I lost my permanent job. The era before that, which I only call the era of diaper, tampon and washing powder commercials, was not creative. In other words, I spent great energies on completing the work at the studio, on the implementation of other people’s ideas, and only occasionally did I manage to create something of my own. 2023 was a year of summation and closure, and I might step futher after that. I have fully integrated the “Dark pages of 2020-2022” into this document. I did this because it pretty much covers the topic, but it’s not complete and doesn’t fit into the open book series. I started processing it at the beginning of the year, and now I am closing with it the entire topic. In other words, from my earliest children’s drawings until I was 51 years old, I processed my entire creative career. I processed myself!”
Zoltan credits his mother’s intricate cross-stitch needlework as one of his earliest and most profound inspirations. Among her works was a large-scale dragon wall hanging, crafted around the time of Zoltan’s birth. This piece accompanied him throughout his life, deeply influencing his visual language.
“The black, red, and white cross-stitched folk patterns have been fully integrated into my creative world,” he shares. “I always admired these simple and striking Sekler designs. In contrast, I was repelled by overly colorful tapestries or patterns from Kalocsa.” This aesthetic preference for bold, minimalistic motifs continues to inform Zoltan’s work, blending tradition with contemporary themes.

This self-reflection culminated in a comprehensive document he calls the “Dark Pages of 2020-2022,”, where he explains “I have pasted this entire material here along with writings and pictures. Some pictures are also included in the paintings, but this is because, in addition to the writing, the pictures was created roughly for the same idea and theme. Some of the graphics and writings were not included in the previous pages. Here I list the graphics that did not fit the topic and the writing or they were created later than the integrated document. I plan to keep adding to this pdf as I make new things. So this document is currently a snapshot, or so I intend. The omitted and new items will be added to the following pages”.
The turning point came in 2023, which Zoltan describes as a year of reflection, closure, and renewal. “From my earliest children’s drawings until I was 51 years old, I processed my entire creative career. I processed myself!” he states.
