Sheila Akposubi

Sheila Akposubi is a self-taught natural light portrait photographer based in London, England. Most of her photoshoots take place outdoors, using the city of London as a vibrant and diverse backdrop. Being born and raised in London, she has developed a deep knowledge of the city, allowing her to discover hidden spots ideal for shooting portraits, often unnoticed by passersby.

She has a deep passion for photographing people, especially when they are placed outside their usual environments. In these moments, there is a visible shift in how the subject looks and behaves – something she loves to capture. It’s this contrast, this blend of unfamiliarity and familiarity, that brings her portraits to life.

Working primarily with a digital camera, she admits she is not overly technical, but has successfully tailored her camera’s settings to suit her unique shooting style. All of her editing is done independently, as she is also self-taught in post-production – crediting “Google as king”.

Her work has gained recognition, with one of her photographs being published in a photo book curated by renowned celebrity photographer Rankin. Her images have also been featured in a Fujifilm exhibition, and showcased in exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and most recently, the Caribbean. In addition, she has completed a PGCE with a focus on photography theory.

Photography is her true passion. For her, everything begins with the connection between photographer and sitter. It is this connection that guides her creative process and defines her approach to portraiture.
