Sonia Indelicato Roseval
Sonia Indelicato Roseval is a Canadian artist of Tunisian origin. Entirely self-taught, she has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in meditation, intuition and disciplined repetition. In recent years, her works have been exhibited in Montreal, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Milan, Venice and Japan, including participation in the prestigious Awagami International Mini Print Exhibition. She has received international recognitions such as the International Prize Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, the International Prize Phoenix for the Arts in Venice, the Harmony for Humanity Art Prize and the AIMPE Honorable Mention in Japan. Her works are included in private and institutional collections, among them the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Collection of L’Assemblée Nationale du Québec.

Sonia Roseval, an artist whose practice unfolds between silence and structure, opens a contemplative space where ink becomes both language and meditation. Her Japanese ink on paper works, often created through freehand drawing on traditional paper and yupo, transcend formal abstraction and enter the realm of spiritual cartography. Built from circular geometries, lace-like repetitions and rhythmic linear structures, her compositions evoke the unity of consciousness and the invisible threads connecting all living beings.
Her artistic process is inseparable from meditation. Each line emerges intuitively, yet accumulates into complex architectures that suggest order within apparent spontaneity. The repetition of motifs which is reminiscent of textile patterns inherited from her mother’s sewing practice, becomes a metaphor for continuity, memory and intergenerational transmission. These delicate yet persistent structures form visual mandalas: not decorative surfaces, but living systems of awareness.

The central motif of her oeuvre is unity – not as abstraction, but rather as lived experience. Circles, cellular forms and expanding networks converge into pulsating constellations that seem to breathe across the page. The dense black ink, sometimes dissolved into subtle tonal gradients, embodies both void and fullness. Through this disciplined repetition, the artist reflects on the interconnectedness of matter and spirit, individuality and collective existence. Her works do not depict unity, they enact it.

In her series of meditative ink drawings, geometric fragments merge into organic wholes. The viewer is drawn into labyrinthine interiors where microcosm mirrors macrocosm. What appears at first as ornament gradually reveals itself as structure, as if mapping neural pathways, cosmic orbits or unseen energetic fields. The surfaces oscillate between fragility and intensity, suggesting that consciousness itself is woven from repetition and variation.

Sonia’s participation in international exhibitions, including shows in New York, Miami and Japan, reflects the universal resonance of her language. Her selection for the Awagami International Mini Print Exhibition which is one of the largest print exhibitions in the world, affirmed the strength of her dialogue with Japanese paper traditions. Yet her work remains deeply personal: each piece begins in silence, guided by breath and intuitive gesture rather than preliminary sketch.

The artist’s upcoming solo exhibition at Le Gesù in Montreal in 2025 will present a new body of forged ink works on yupo, expanding her investigation into transparency, layering and luminous depth. These recent pieces intensify the dialogue between control and surrender, structure and flow, material surface and immaterial presence. Sonia Roseval’s art constitutes a ritual of concentration. It invites the viewer not to interpret, but to enter and to slow down, to trace the movement of line, to experience the rhythm of repetition as a meditative act. Her drawings become spaces of quiet revelation, where the fragmented world regains coherence through attentive seeing.

As the artist affirms through her practice, unity is not an abstract ideal but a lived awareness: a continuous weaving of consciousness through form. In an era marked by fragmentation, her work offers a counterpoint – a patient reconstruction of wholeness, line by line, circle by circle.
