FINISSAGE: Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art at Homo Faber

Artesanía Cataluña of the Generalitat, in collaboration with the Government of Catalonia’s delegation in Italy and the Galeries d’Art de Catalunya (Association of Art Galleries of Catalonia), is pleased to invite you to the finissage of Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art exhibition on April 27 at 5:00 PM, at the end of the 2nd edition of this international event, held in Venice, from 08 April to 27 April. Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art is a selection of contemporary works by 31 Catalan artisans and artists that have been hosted by THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space (book your visit here | free entry) as part of Homo Faber’s In Città programme, which offers visitors the opportunity to discover the city of Venice through an immersive tour of different exhibition spaces and craft workshops.

On Sunday 10 April, at 11 a.m., Agnès Russiñol y Amat, Director of the Consorci de Comerç, Artesania i Moda (Consortium of Trade, Crafts and Fashion), and Luca Bellizzi Cerri, the Government of Catalonia’s delegate in Italy, inaugurated the exhibition, together with its curators and artists. With the Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art exhibition, Catalonia participated in the 2nd edition of Homo Faber, the world’s leading crafts event, organised by the Michelangelo Foundation, from 08 April to 27 April in Venice.

Artesania Catalunya, which belongs to the Government of Catalonia’s Consorci de Comerç, Artesania i Moda (Consortium of Trade, Crafts and Fashion, or CCAM), with the collaboration of the government’s delegation in Italy, the Associació de Galeries d’Art de Catalunya (Association of Art Galleries of Catalonia) and the Institut Ramon Llull, presented this exhibition that showcases a selection of contemporary works by 31 Catalan artisans and artists. This event is part of Artesania Catalunya’s internationalization plan, which seeks to promote the internationalization of Catalan art and crafts as well as their prestige and recognition.

Homo Faber is an international fair that champions artisan talent and is committed to the role of craftsmanship in the creation of a more sustainable and inclusive future. This edition celebrates the “living treasures” of craftsmanship through 15 exhibitions that invite visitors to discover the connection between Europe and Japan; more than 400 unique creations by 350 designers and artisans from more than 30 countries. Moreover, this year features Homo Faber’s In Città programme, which offers visitors the opportunity to discover the city of Venice through an immersive tour of different museums, galleries and craft workshops in the city. Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art will be on display at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space as part of the In Città programme, providing visitors with a personalised, self-guided tour of the different craft initiatives on offer in the city.

Also in attendance, there were the exhibition curators, Mónica Ramon Navarro i Rubén Torres, as well as a group of artists who are participating in the exhibition, including Luesma&Vega (ceramics and glass); Aurelio San Pedro (painting, sculpture, collage and interactive media); Clara Niubó (jewellery), Francesca Poza (engraving), Lluís Comín (jewellery), and Ruth Cepedano (ceramics).

This exhibition has its origins in the Catalan Crafts Biennial, an initiative promoted by Artesania Catalunya, which was launched in July 2021 to showcase and export the talent of Catalan artisans and artists around the world, as well as to promote their sales on an international level. The first edition of the Biennial, dedicated to the intersection between art and crafts, consisted of the exhibition Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art at the Centro de Artesanía Catalunya, a catalogue and a website featuring artists and artisans with their most recent works. Thus, after showing in Barcelona, Visions of Catalonia. Crafting Art makes its first international appearance in Venice.

The exhibition featured pieces by 31 creators who work in Catalonia. The pieces were crafted using artisan techniques, ranging from sculpture to jewellery, textiles, engraving, forging, paper and collage, stone, glass and ceramics. At some point during the creative process, the artists used diverse craft techniques, and the works displayed their mastery of the craft. The 31 artists selected for the exhibition are: Jordi Aparicio (jewellery), Jean Briac (sculpture), Brucc (sculpture), Ruth Cepedano (ceramics), Roger Coll (ceramics), Carme Collell (ceramics), Lluís Comin (jewellery), Germán Consetti (sculpture), Mireia Coromina (textile), Rosa Cortiella (ceramics), Carol Fleischman (textile and engraving), Matilde Grau (sculpture), Mia Llauder (ceramics), Madola (ceramics), Carla Mañosas (textile), Jordi Marcet – Rosa Vila-Abadal (ceramics), Melcior Martí, (textile), Montferrer (forging and sculpture), Clara Niubò (jewellery), Laia Pla (textile sculpture), Francesca Poza (engraving), Ramon Puig Cuyás (jewellery), Victòria Rabal (paper and textile), Stella Rahola (sculpture and installations), Jordi Ribaudí (cuir), Teresa Rosa (textile), Tura Sanglas (sculpture), Aurelio San Pedro (painting, sculpture, collage and interactive media), Joan Serra (ceramics), Jordi Traveria (pedra i vidre), and Luesma & Vega, (stone and glass).
