Funky Doris
Norwegian Designer Label

I create contemporary designs with a personal twist rooted in our Scandinavian design tradition. My philosophy Is to make charming everyday product in long-lasting qualities. I love colors and the simple aesthetic from the Nordic design history. Color is the key to a happy home and the new range of funky designs is made with passion for geometrical shapes and lots of colors to mix. The patterns are well coordinated so you can mix and match pillows and blankets to achieve your own funky vibe. The producers are important to me, and I make sure to work with skilled crafts people. All the designs are made with respect for people and nature.

Funky Doris was launched in 2014 by Tove Trydal (me) and Grethe Bjørk. Today I run the company by my self doing almost everything, like designing, marketing, handling agents, planning production, taking most of the photos, doing the catalogues etc. etc. running a small business like this is more of a lifestyle than having a regular job

I have worked as a textile designer for almost 30 years, and I absolutely love what I do. Textile has become my lif e-long fascination. I have been working with many different types of textiles over the years, with print, embroidery, weaving and now in my own company I manly work with jacquard knitted blankets and pillows, in a lovely soft cotton quality. I find it quit interesting to work with the limitations there is in the knitting production. It works very well using a limited amount of color, playing with circles, triangles and rectangles – for me its all about the color palette and the graphic composition.

I only work with natural material like, cotton and linen, and hopefully also introducing blankets in wool very soon. Most of the prouction is based in India, and I do a few kitchen textiles in Lithuania.

I started the company with a friend who had been working with design and redesign of clothes and also ran a vintage shop for many years. We started the company just after I returned home after living in in Bangalore with my family. I find most of my inspiration in our recent Scandinavian design history, I just love the vintage vibe from the 50es and the sixites. There was a playful almost naïve attitude toward mixing colors and geometric shapes, at that time.

What’s better than to add that vitamin boost with piles of pillows and soft blankets. It gives an instant facelift to any home, and adds a welcoming splash of colour. I prefer the personal styled homes where the styles have evolved over the years. I like to mix old with new, icons with cheeper stuff. A home should be lived in, and not be too styled up, in my opinion.
