Helix Lamp by Michael Samoriz

Michael Samoriz is one of the founders of the Umbra Design Studio. His Helix Lamp is a kind lighting unit that comes in a squiggly coil design. It is an ode to the very symbol of lighting, the tungsten filament.

The iconic shape of the tungsten coil, a characteristic element of every incandescent bulb, is mirrored in the design of the lamp’s outer body. For the Helix Lamp, he has maximized the shape of the tungsten coil, rotating it into a horizontal position resulting in a minimalistic silhouette spring-shaped hanging lamp.

By mirroring the characteristic element of every incandescent bulb, the Helix Lamp hangs from the ceiling in a very gracious way, emitting light only from its bottom curvatures. What is particularly arresting about the spiralling light is not just its shape, but the fact that its design allows the user to expand and contract the lamp depending on their use and preference.
