Interview: Aldis Ivars
Luca Curci
talks with Aldis Ivars during BORDERPLACES, second appointment of CANVAS ART FAIR 2023, at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space, London.

“I put myself on the canvas, and that painting will live on when I leave this world, it’s a part of myself like my offsprings. This is my life, and this is my love. I paint for myself, not to please others, but to grow as an artist. People appreciating my art is just a bonus. It’s my passion to create, and since my childhood, a strong feeling inside me. Gives me a sense of well-being, feeling of the moment, the being in the present.”

LUCA CURCI – What is art for you?
ALDIS IVARS –
Looking at art fills me with joy. It’s been my passion since childhood to create art with strong feelings inside me. That feeling of being in the moment, in the presence, gives me a sense of well-being. And once I sense that my artwork is approaching completion, it feels like an offspring. That’s how good it makes me feel.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
AI –
I was born in Iceland and I have been living there ever since. The land of volcanoes, fire and ice. The powerful nature which is so unpredictable, clearly influences my work.

LC – What is the role the artist plays in society and contemporary art?
AI –
According to me, an artist’s work mirrors the society they live in and reflects back with influence too. Be it fashion, policy, architecture, politics and many others. It’s what brings joy and depth into human lives.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
AI –
Walking in Icelandic nature inspires me the most. By observing the lava from the volcanoes, in all its shapes and forms and by feeling the power that created it. I also like to learn from the perspectives of other abstract artists who work with the power of contrasts and movements as their key elements.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
AI –
Yes, I believe so. Initially, I began my journey with figurative paintings followed by abstract art. But something tells me that I should try and bring back the figures into my current form and combine the two. I think it could be interesting.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this festival? In which way did it inspire you
AI –
The concept itself is very interesting and the most inspiring part for me was to participate with a number of artists from across the world bringing their mixed media work together. It’s an exciting feeling!

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this exhibition? How is it connected to the theme of the entire festival?
AI –
The theme of the festival, ‘Borderplaces’ connects well with the themes of my artworks. The first one, sends the message that you take your time ‘offline’ and the second one suggests you stay in the ‘moment’ to enjoy the exhibition.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
AI –
Yes absolutely! As I said, it was a thrilling experience to be exposed to this wide variety of artists from different backgrounds and their different art forms.
