Luca Curci
talks with Alexander Kamakaev during the first edition of BARCELONA CONTEMPORARY 2021 at Valid World Hall Gallery.

“The Contemporary Artist” project. It lies there, at a distance, staring. It absorbs all that touches its orb. Concentrates the reality it sees and then reflects all out again – perfectly imperfect, distorted reflections, according to its own unique characteristics, its situational perspectives. It reflects that which is familiar, that which it understands. It roams, it searches, pondering, sometimes mesmerized, confused, worried or calmed by sudden insights. What is this thing, a strange object in a strange environment? An alien being from another planet? No. He IS The Contemporary Artist.

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Alexander Kamakaev –
Art for me is the primary, most understandable way of communicating with people. In a world of politics and lies, where universal human values withdraw into the shadows, art is a reason to talk about us, what we have become and what awaits us. This is the area of freedom. There, we can talk about everything that touches us. This is a reason to think about each of us individually and about all of us together.

LC – According to you, what makes a good photo? Which details do you focus on?
AK –
In my opinion, a photograph is good if it conveys well a thought, an author’s statement. And if it conveys an interesting idea that can evoke emotions in the viewer and immerse him in thought. The longer the viewer thinks, worries about what he has just seen, the better the photo is.

LC – What is your creative process like?
AK –
Probably, similar to others. I always listen to myself, to what worries me. If I see in my head how to tell others about it through images, I start drawing sketches and drafts. Then I go and take pictures. Nothing special. In the past, photography was more focused on beautiful single shots. Today this is not enough. To tell something, you need to show the project. And not always beautiful.

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
AK –
It’s never been a better time for artists! The lack of boundaries and limitations has resulted in an incredible palette of artists. And they say so much that it is breathtaking and gives food for comprehension of something that I had not even thought about before! Art has ceased to be something elite to a narrow circle of connoisseurs. Today, art can be understood by anyone who wants to. And everyone can find the answer to their own question through painting, photography, installation, sculpture, or performance.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
AK –
The most difficult aspect is separating myself and the public, to understand that the topic is fascinating not only for me but also for others. That’s perhaps why I presented the project “The Contemporary Artist”, I hope it can be understood easily in the environment provided and every artist can recognize themselves in this mirror ball.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this festival? How did it inspire you?
AK –
The concept is great. The atmosphere of the festival emphasizes the diversity of contemporary art that I talked about earlier. I have seen loads of infusive, talented, and smart artists. This does inspire indeed!

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this exhibition? How is it connected to the theme of the entire festival?
AK –
My message is simple: I showed a contemporary artist from the outside. After all, every artist sees it only from his own perspective. I felt this would be interesting for everyone to see their portraits.

LC – What do you think about the ITSLIQUID Platform?
AK –
I am sure that you are doing a great and useful job. You are making a holiday for everyone, both for spectators and for artists.

LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
AK –
Everything is organized perfectly, just like a good mechanical watch. The organizers are positive and professional and there is nothing more to add really. Thank you all so much!

LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
AK –
Yes, I have already recommended you to all of my friends! Thanks again for everything!
