talks with Annamaria Antonazzo during OUT OF BALANCE, second appointment of CANVAS London International Art Fair, at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space.

Annamaria Antonazzo was born in Italy in 1986. She enrolled at the Fine Arts Academy of Lecce (Italy), where she studied Painting and Contemporary Arts. Following her time there, she continued her studies on an undergraduate course in Graphic Design, which resulted in an experimental thesis on the translation of sound into images. This thesis was titled ‘Sound and Sign: Graphic consideration through the analysis of the creative processes. “My artistic work is developed using Painting (tempera, oil colour, acrylic, watercolour), Printmaking and Drawing. The concept is the idea of memory. Memory as ‘Mimnésco’ and as ‘Re-Cordor’. Human experiences occur in the seconds in which they happen, but then what remains after that, is only a memory. This memory is influenced by feelings and the environment that surround the subject to which they belong. A memory is unable to retain all the data that its owner receives. Memory is very similar to a canvas or a sketchbook: it shapes what we are and determines our choices and actions. We are continually, subconsciously fighting against our desire to forget certain memories and to conserve others. Memories surface when we would prefer to ignore them but once our minds are in a dream state, we are vulnerable, and these memories take hold. The works I present are part of a corpus of paintings entitled ‘Thoughts and deeds for the unaccomplished one’ or ‘Reliquary’. They are produced on linen canvas with egg tempera, the frame is not absent, the canvas is sealed between two glass / Plexiglas plates. The material was chosen with a purpose, the canvas fabric refers to something ancient and contemporary, egg tempera intends to be a common thread between the past and the present. In deciding to eliminate the frame and hold the piece between two slabs of glass, the canvas was meant I made as a shroud-relic. The canvases are meant to work either individually, in groups or in pairs, as they communicate with each other. The work as a whole is meant to be seen as succession, and portray the presence of these bodies locked within the arches, they resemble the idea of the nave in a church with its minor altars. This body of work emerges from reflection on individual potential and the inability to make it blossom. This reflection visually translates the impediment into an arch, the arch is taken into consideration as an architectural object with a precise historical and social connotation. It also suggests, the inevitability of being part of a larger architectural structure, but the building that would be part of the arch does not exist in the canvases, it exists only as an idea for the subjects represented. The export of the building suggests that the casualties that prevented the individual’s fulfilment may have been more precarious and illusory than the man or woman involved could imagine or see from within the situation. It opens up the possibility that the causes that prevented them from asserting themselves were not insurmountable or that they may have been created by themselves.

Luca Curci – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
Annamaria Antonazzo –
I decided to become a visual artist in December 2006, during my first year of FAA at Lecce. I have always known that I wanted to become creative, but that was the year in which I made the decision to do it professionally. I studied painting and printmaking for many years, looking at artists such as Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Balthus and Casorati. After this, I studied Digital Art, became interested in sound and its possible correlation with images and I made a thorough study of the work of Carmelo Bene. There is not a particular experience that has influenced my work, perhaps my years of studying gave me the chance to meet and share ideas with talented young artists and teachers.

LC – Which subject are you working on?
AA –
At the moment I’m working on the concept of memory. Memory and forgetfulness. I am always working with tempera and raw linen but I am looking to combine these mediums with others. I am more interested in the creative process than the product. Indeed, the collaboration with two friends that work with the sound and video (Claudia and Ondrej) is becoming important.

LC – Which is the role the artist plays in society? And contemporary art?
AA –
I don’t have a complete answer, maybe there is not a role. For me, the creative process is a way of being in contact with reality and the artwork is the result of this. If I had to find a role, in my experience art provokes and increases my capacity for thought. It is the expression and the product of something deep in us, something that goes beyond the surface and the satisfaction of basic needs. It reminds us who we really are and very often it is a magnifying glass on the time that we are living.

LC – What is your creative process like?
AA –
I usually start working from a basic concept that interests me at the moment. It always comes from reading poetry, books, watching movies and listening to music. Firstly, I usually draw an idea in my sketchbook and jot down anything that might be relevant to the concept. When the project is clear I start looking for a suitable technique and then I assess whether this will work. However, during the process I try to forget the basic concept (I use it just as a pretext) and concentrate only on the esthetic of the work, I don’t want the work to become illustrative.

LC – Do visitors’ suggestions enrich yourself and your art?
AA –
They are an integral part of the creative process. I’m quite secure with my artwork, not because I think it’s perfect (I don’t think so) but because I take it very seriously. Being something that I have produced, I can judge myself on the creative process but I cannot see the work in an objective way (if there is an objective way). Whether they are suggestions, criticisms or compliments, they are important for the next step, regardless of whether I agree or not.

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the festival’s theme?
AA –
The works that I presented can be read as a reflection on the individual potential and the inability to realize it and make it flourish. This inability can also be a choice, the choice to adapt to the expectations of society for example. A more comfortable choice but which translates into self-sacrifice. This was not the only interpretation but the theme covered by the festival reminded me of this a lot. It seemed to me there was a strong connection, so I decided to participate in this work.

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the festival or as a part of pre-existing works?
AA –
The work presented is part of a corpus of 21 paintings produced on linen canvas with egg tempera. Each canvas is sealed between two sheets of glass because it was designed as a relic of the shroud. The work as a whole must be seen in succession and represent these bodies closed inside the arches. It recalls the nave of a Catholic church with its minor altars and the celebration of its martyrs.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
AA –
I think it is an excellent platform for artists from different parts of the world to exhibit, meet and share their creative processes.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
AA –
Yes, I received all the support I needed, I also found the people who work there really professional and prepared. It was extremely pleasant to get to know and chat with part of the team on the evening of the exhibition.

LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
AA –
I have no suggestions, I think it is already a good platform and it is absolutely a great chance. I was really happy to have collaborated with ITSLIQUID GROUP, I wish the whole team the success it deserves. Thanks.
