Interview: Avventura R
Luca Curci
talks with Avventura R during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2021 – 8TH EDITION, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

Rosalba Avventura, in art Avventura R, was born in ’97 in Naples. She lives in Vico Equense an existence dedicated to nature, art and affections. She has been artistically formed all her life, first through her father’s passions, especially interested in painting, then becoming passionate about photography in her teens and continuing her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. Graduated from the three-year course in Communication and Didactics of Art, almost at the end of the specialization in Didactics and Cultural Mediation of Artistic Heritage, she intends to continue her studies specializing in Photography as a language of art. Her main medium is photography, which she has deepened as a self-taught, making it become her art language. During the years of training at the Academy of Naples, she was able to broaden her horizons immersing herself even more in deep artistic and spiritual research. Under the influence of the aesthetics of artists such as Francesca Woodman, Ansel Adams, Maria Lai and others, photography becomes for her an alphabet through which to express her connection with the surrounding universe. She’s interested in the expression of her perceptions, of her thoughts about the world, dealing with themes such as death, reflections on the universe and on invalidating emotions such as anxiety; she is also dedicated to the sensitization on some social themes that are relevant for her, such as the fight against pollution. In fact, among her various projects, there are critical works of awareness and works that seek the depth of life by exploring her own unconscious and, indirectly, that of the observer. In recent years she has tended to move away from the two-dimensionality of digital technology towards an almost sculptural kind of photography, which does not limit itself to working only on images, but also on words and space, tending towards a material construction of her works.

Luca Curci – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
Avventura R –
Speaking of my artistic path so far, I can say with certainty that my background, and therefore everything that has influenced my work, is composed mainly of people who have inspired me. First of all my father with his passion for art, painting and in general for his curiosity and desire to create. Then deepening the art and photography, in addition to various books read a bit ‘by chance’ and my path in the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples were mainly wonderful personalities who made me grow artistically, first of all, my best friend Elena Iacono, a special photographer. I believe that the dialogue with her has been a crucial element for my research, also because I think she is the person who looks at the world with the same curiosity as I do. Banally what influences my work is my life and every event that makes it up, I would not specify a single episode, I always believe that a point is reached through the union of different ‘threads’.

LC – When you take photos, are you usually inspired by the situation or do you find inspiration in yourself?
AR –
For each work I create, the inspiration comes mainly from my inner feelings, which are what I try to communicate and transform through artistic photography.

LC – According to you, what makes a good photo? Which details do you focus on?
AR –
I don’t know how to define what a “good photo” is, because sometimes I can appreciate something technically fascinating, other times I can be more impressed by the message hidden behind a work. Generally, I don’t like to define what is a good photo or what is not, my judgment is based more on how much a photo strikes me, regardless of technical and formal judgments.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
AR –
Surely the hardest part is bringing into reality an idea and a vision that may not always be realized just as it was in my mind.

LC – Which is the role the artist plays in society? And contemporary art?
AR –
The roles of an artist and art, in general, for me are countless, the most important is probably being able to communicate a concept in a visual way, being able to give it nuances that can make a message more understandable and noteworthy.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
AR –
The concept of the exhibition regarding the identities of each of us is very interesting because it leads to focus on the different levels that exist below our surface. Just the will to investigate our consciousness proposed by the exhibition is what struck me the most and that comes closest to my way of seeing the world.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this exhibition? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
AR –
The artwork I exhibited is part of a series of 12 works that investigate the emotionality of people, trying to dig deep into the mind in a cathartic process of reconstruction of the self. All this connects well to the concept ‘Mixing Identities’ that precisely wants to analyze hidden parts of our identity.

AR –
Yes, it has been a good experience.

LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
AR –
