Interview: Doyeon Kim
Luca Curci talks
with Doyeon Kim during BARCELONA CONTEMPORARY 2021, 2nd Edition, at Valid World Hall Gallery, and during FRAGMENTED IDENTITIES, the second appointment of BORDERS ART FAIR 2021, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

Doyeon Kim is an artist who is actively engaged in painting, ceramics, painting murals, ceramic wall paintings, sculptures, and exhibitions on the theme of the spread of happiness, energy, expansion through convergence, and the power of positive energy.

“I want to become an artist who communicates with the world through works and spreads beneficial energy to the world. Looking at the positive changes in the life of those who have come across my work gives me powerful energy. I am happy because I can feel the energy exchange with many people through my work. In the future, I would like to work around the world and feel the energy of my work spread widely with happiness.”

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Doyeon Kim –
There are energies that always exist in our lives, and there are energies that act on us in the world even if it’s not visible. As I was drawn by this energy, I began to draw the world as the source of all energy. These paintings have given me purification and healing and made it possible for me to fulfill my desires.

LC – What are your thoughts while you paint? Do you have any habits or rituals while you work?
DK –
All the time I spend working on art is like time for meditation to me. As in a state of meditation, it is a state of clear consciousness, such as letting go and emptying, circulation such as breathing, cosmic consciousness, and a state of trance. Making art is a happy and grateful practice for me.
First, before going to the workspace, I meditate and bow 108 times like a prayer and purify myself. And I purify the space where I work as a sacred space for praying. After burning incense and performing a dance-like movement that connects to the energy of the source, and then I focus on the artwork.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
DK –
I am inspired by all God’s creations. “Energy Generation” is a work that expresses the explosive expansion and attraction of energy and contains the desire of the viewers and the power to achieve the desire.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
DK –
The most difficult part of working for a long time was the process of looking at my own mind, looking at all the various aspects, and purifying and moving forward, being aware of the oneness of my relationship with everything, and time to unite them all. Now, those times have passed and it has become the union itself, and now I work comfortably.

LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?
DK –
When I look at the finished work, the energy I feel in the work looks like a wave with rhythm, dance, and aura with beautiful colors. Inspirations from looking at all of God’s creation and the beauty of seeing in a state of contemplation also hit me. I think that energy will make the world beautiful. The desire to become an artist who shares beauty with the world and benefits the world with its energy is infinitely generated from within like a spring of water.
