Interview: Eleni Pasiata
Luca Curci talks with Eleni Pasiata during the 20th edition of VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2024 at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice.

Eleni Pasiata was born in 1999 in Thessaloniki, Greece. She lives and works in Thessaloniki. At the age of 16, she was admitted to the School of Fine Arts, Department of Visual and Applied Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, after she was selected by special predisposition for Arts’ category. She began studying Fine Arts, painting and printmaking, on 2017 and she graduated on 2023. 

Luca Curci – What are you currently working on?
Eleni Pasiata – I’m currently working on a new series of paintings in which I want to present the destabilization of humanity through every day scenes and moments that sometimes define the rest of our lives. My interest began when I discovered Christoph Büchel’s installation “Monte di Pietà” at Fondazione Prada in Venice.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
EP – I am a visual artist from Greece. I live and studied Fine Arts in Thessaloniki. Generally my inspiration derives from human and its psyche, but also from cinema and music. The experience that has influenced me the most, was a few years ago when I was feeling oppressed and stressed about everything in my life and couldn’t find a way out. Over time this feeling turned into art.

LC – What do you think about art on social media? Are they turning into the new showcases of contemporary art?
EP – I believe that social media have a great power and influence on people. Many platforms have given the opportunity to artists to rise and communicate their creations. However, there is a risk that all this online exposure may lead you to the paths of the ephemeral. It certainly cannot replace the physical viewing of the work, but with a proper management it can contribute to the promotion of the artists.

LC – What issues do you intend to deal with in the future?
EP – I would like to work on many ideas. One of them is about “vitiligo“. I want to create the way I see the people who deal with this condition, because I believe that it is one of the most beautiful marks a human body can have. It seems to me as uncharted areas which invite you to explore them.

LC – Is there an unrealised or unrealisable project, even a crazy one, that you would like to work on?
EP – There are not unrealisable projects, only ideas that have not been done yet. I prefer to work on a project as much as I can, in order to reach its completion somehow and then move on to the next one. A project that could be considered as a crazy one, is to manage some day to set up an installation with huge paintings in a very big industrial space.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
EP – The concept of the 20th edition of Venice International Art Fair, about the relationship between body and space, leaded me in new paths. It motivated me to develop my ideas and my artistic reasoning.

LC – Your last artistic production attracted us, has the artwork presented been created for the exhibition or as a part of preexisting works?
EP – The works that have been exhibited belong to the “Dis-comfort“ series and refer to suffocating sutuations which seem to lead us to an “asphyxiation“, either becoming from others or we ourselves end up there. It began as a personal experience and then generalized to third parties.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
EP – I believe that ITSLIQUID Platform is a great opportunity for artists and emerging ones, offering high quality services with a professional approach.

LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
EP – The organization has been excellent. Every member of ITSLIQUID Group was very helpful and payed attention to every detail, resulting in an amazing experience and a wide range of artworks.
