Interview: Eliana Valentini
Luca Curci talks with Eliana Valentini during CANVAS INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2022, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.
Starting in a small and cosy studio near Milan Italy first, continuing then in Dublin and now professionally settled in Sligo Ireland, Eliana is continuing her personal research work, interpreting and elaborating on various commissions. Eliana started to experiment with the role of emotions in relation to shapes and colours, transcending rationality, and letting her watercolours guide her. The final result helped Eliana to open new channels and inner visions, bonding personally to each commission and creating a bridge of communication between the initial request and the uniqueness of the final painting, with a strong emotional impact. Eliana moved to Ireland in 2008 to complete her project, and the word “Illustration” became a fusion between her inner spiritual and dreamlike world and the reality of the external world. Dreams, emotions, fairy tales, poems, experiences and messages are thus illustrated by Eliana, often using symbolic shapes and colours, adapting her style to different types of graphic work and personal commissions. The unpredictability of the final result of every painting encourages Eliana to apply this style to the different fields of illustration and to accept new challenges in which she feels appreciated and motivated to improve in this infinite path. Eliana invites you to view some examples of her work, let yourself be guided by your curiosity, dedicating the time you feel necessary to any painting that might not be immediately accessible.
Luca Curci – What are you currently working on?
Eliana Valentini – I have a few projects at the moment. One is travelling: last year, 2021, I started travelling for International Exhibitions and now I am participating at Canvas with two pieces. That is an observation of our Geopolitical situation at different levels including Exopolitics and deep Earth energies manifested. This project is growing with time and each new journey to new exhibitions. I’m currently completing my “lockdown painting”, I still haven’t got a title but it was born in 2020 with a white watercolour paper taped on my desk and accompanying my everyday joy and sorrow during the lockdown like in between a diary and forgotten multifunctional scratch paper. It will be finished in a few days now with the end of restrictions and back to life again here in Ireland. More projects about nature and reconnection with ancient Irish culture and his shamanic tradition are going to start soon.
LC – What is art for you?
EV – Art is the unique expression contained in each human being. It connects the visible and the invisible that we are experiencing every day with its infinite combinations. It represents the individual and the collectiveness together and on a planetary level, it creates a universal language.
LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
EV – Yes, I usually do start focusing on a theme, but then the theme can change unexpectedly during the process
LC – How is your creative process?
EV – I used to say: “I love painting with my eyes closed”. Using very few or no points of reference from our external visual reality I like to observe and memorize first and let my heart and mind filter my memories guiding me into shapes and colours surprising me into a non-controlled journey in which I can learn and discover more meaning breaking the reality in many layers.
LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
EV – Only a few slight changes happened since the beginning. I started researching dreams, I found that there was something beyond dreams and brought me deeper and deeper into high consciousness, vibrations and frequencies through shapes and colours with my watercolours adding the water and air element with their unpredictable touch.
LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
EV – With my project “Dreamsinterwoven” I would like to open a reflection on our present intricated World situation analysed from a Geopolitical and Exopolitical perspective translating into art the invisible language of interdimensional layers around the human being’s energetic fields. Meditation, telepathy, empathy, compassion, spiritual techniques other holistic disciplines will be part of this project to give a unique voice to the soundless needs of our real selves as human beings. Canvas themes like Skin Project, Out of Balance and Mixing Identities represents our condition and our main point of reflection looking for a non-judgmental observation of ourselves at the present time. Marking artistically this extraordinary planetary moment of massive change in his positive and negative aspects, challenges and new perspectives for the future bringing art expression as the main language for material and spiritual interconnected communication.
LC – Can you explain something about the artworks you have in our exhibition?
EV – I really like the free interpretation of my paintings and I encourage people to spend time and have a journey in their imagination watching my paintings. “Cell” (Yellow colour) Initially inspired by an intricate Geopolitical vision of our life during Covid19, ended unexpectedly in an interdimensional journey within our Human Body. “Cell” in the English language is a double meaning word translatable in Italian as “cellula” in his biological meaning or “cella” referring to prison. “Geo Tribe” (Blue colour) Geopolitics and spirituality fusing into one message. A vision of our planet held by the cups of duality and relationships, conquests and competitions, the balance of the opposites. White lotus flowers bring our consciousness from the light to our brown deep roots within the Earth. Egyptian dance is leading humanity to knowledge and truth. In both of those paintings Earth energy recalled Ancient Egyptian symbols, this was the final surprise for me and maybe a guide to continue with my next paintings. The way they appeared during the drying process and define themselves to my eyes was magic and I like to share this trust feeling I’m experiencing through this project.
LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
EV – Yes, when I read the general presentation, I felt like being part of a big creative family connecting us internationally in one and all languages through Art.
LC – What is your idea about ITSLIQUID GROUP? What are your suggestions about our services?
EV – It is a great group. I embrace the philosophy and the attention to any details, it shows me a real understanding of Art. It’s my first experience so far, but everything is managed so professionally, this makes things much easier especially when we communicate from far distances.
