Interview: Eva Nicky
Luca Curci talks with Eva Nicky during SUPERNATURAL held in London, at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space.

Eva Nicky was born in 1970. She defines herself as a “painter of art in life, Street art & Hip- Hop”. A fighting artist, her creativity is that of a commitment where she advocates culture as the foundation of social ties. To be a woman, to produce material to fight, to share culture, sound, and visual art, and to re-enchant cosmopolitanism, these are the paths on which she walks, under the Occitan sun.

Luca Curci – What are you currently working on?
Eva Nicky –
A gallery of portraits on the Virtuous Feminine Plural! I know the invisibilization of women: “the great forgotten of history”. I am going to realize a gallery of life-size portraits of 7 memorable women using acrylic, pigments and plaster, exhaling the virtues. I will retain the number 7 which gives rhythm to our perception of the days, weeks, and inexorable time flowing. On the other side, I will mobilize the 7 Judeo-Christian virtues: fortitude, prudence, temperance, justice, trust, hope, and love of mankind and the 7 virtues of Bushido drawn from the religious and philosophical beliefs of Japan from the 12th to the 19th century: honesty to one’s own conscience, courage by assuming boldness and danger, compassion, courtesy, sincerity where speaking and acting are one and the same action, honour in one’s soul and conscience, commitment. I will consider virtue as the ability to live according to one’s principles, virtue as the practice of acting in accordance with the deployment of one’s thought; I will not lose sight of the fact that philosophy, just like contemporary history, has been previously amputated of its missing feminine part. Moral philosophy as it has been transmitted to us has hidden the part of women: companions, mistresses, daughters, sisters, mothers or grandmothers. The same is true of history. I will associate with each defined virtue a memorable woman from here or elsewhere, known, unknown or insufficiently recognized. This will allow me to cultivate an intercultural perspective by discovering and appropriating other plastic languages: I will choose free women who have been granted the right to think and act differently.

LC – How did you get to your current artistic practice? Is there an unrealised or unrealisable project, even a crazy one that you would like to work on?
EN –
I paint because I can’t do otherwise. I have never stopped since kindergarten! Painting is my breath in this world of brutes. As an activist, I have mixed a professional career of more than 30 years in social and medical-social action with culture as the basis of all social links. Today I’m at that point of my life when there is nothing more important for me than create – but also a desire to say something and to fight. I love this challenge of living from my painting, now or never, while maintaining a field action; I am President of an association of emergency accommodation in Toulouse accompanying people who don’t have a shelter but who already have opinions! I am cultivating two projects, the craziest would be to challenge my portrait gallery “Vertueux Féminin Pluriel” with a graffiti artist! The most feasible is the space dedicated to creation in all its forms – art as a consciousness gas pedal! – that I hope to inaugurate in the centre of Toulouse in 2024 in our new day centre for the homeless: La Fabrique de Liens!

LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
EN –
Undeniably, in the first place, painting has always been a resource for me as a woman confronting the banality of ordinary sexism. It’s a muted oppression that you have to face with a smile. I have this desire to express feminist thought. To think differently, to act differently! To paint this thought,to contribute to name the unspeakable and to bring resonance to any form of liberation of the word of the women! At the same time, I want to oppose this pain of existence of being a woman here and elsewhere: joy, a space without a place for resignation to brighten up the existence, to open to new possibilities and to celebrate the strength of women, their sisterhood, to recognize them, to restore their curves and their determinations. Secondly, the richness born of difference has always seemed to me to be an obviousness and I have never ceased to enrich myself with this precious gift. It is important to me to transcribe that there is not only one way of being in the world, it is always time to work towards a common and plural identity, relentlessly re-enchanting cosmopolitanism.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
EN –
I think I have gained in intensity and complexity. I have this desire to sharpen the precision of the detail, the alloy of the words, the forms, the motives and the colours and to mix the materials: always the vivacity of the acrylic, the depth sometimes of the pigments, the introduction of the plaster to sublimate the curves and volumes.

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the exhibition or as a part of preexisting works? Can you explain something about the artwork you have in our exhibition?
EN –
The works presented, Group of Women at the Edge of the world, Free, Dark side, Without comment, and Practice of freedom, have all given rhythm to my year 2022. I have cultivated dark funds in the face of a particularly sensitive year on a personal level, where it was essential to mobilize my energy to fight the harshness of existence. On September 16, the death of Masha Amini for a badly worn veil, tragically scandalized the heart of this barbarism, the need to fight for the practice of freedom. “Feminism is an ally of democracy, it defends it, promotes it, reinforces it, completes it. It is also a force of proposal for another life and for another world, which it does not give up to change.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
EN –
It is an opportunity for stimulation, experience and exchange. It is also an opportunity to think about one’s practice, to freeze the image, to pause, especially in the context of this interview space which takes the time to reflect on the content.

LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
EN –
I appreciated the reactivity of the upstream exchanges and the reassuring support, notably for the transport of the works. I also appreciated the welcome and the public I met, lovers of art in all its forms, involved and very open to the world. The difficulty for me lay in the choice of the hanging for my production; it is the risk of a collective exhibition!
