Interview: Géraldo Teteh
Luca Curci talks with Géraldo Teteh during the third appointment of CANVAS CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.

Géraldo Teteh is a Togolese (West Africa) visual artist born in 1976 in Lomé-Togo whose artistic approach combines realism and the abstract with the use of various materials such as paper, fragments of fabric, metal parts, wood and cowrie shells. An artistic production that expresses his vision of the world, human values, relationships between people, state of mind and nature. Passionately convinced of the important role that art must play in the education of our societies, the artist positions himself as a humanist and an awakened dreamer. After participating in many local “Artistic Residences” in Togo and Benin, he took part in the Dutch artistic trade fair “Nationale Kunstdagen 2022” in Gorinchem in the Netherlands with more than 2000 visitors. Géraldo Teteh was recently selected for the collective Exhibition “Canvas International Art Fair-Visions” organised by ITSLIQUID GROUP in Italy from 07 to 24 April 2023. His artwork “Dimensions Humaines 2” was also selected for the 08th edition of “London Contemporary International Art Fair” in 2023. His artworks have been exhibited in the Gallery “Weserart” in Germany since 2022.

Luca Curci – What are your thoughts while you paint? Do you have any habits or rituals while you work?
Geraldo Teteh – Starting a new artwork is a special moment and a journey towards a new destination for me. It is in fact a kind of inspiration-guided journey to which I do not associate any specific rituals. This is the reason why I am used to saying that “an Artist is a slave of his/her own inspiration”.

LC – What is the trigger that leads you to paint?
GT – I would say my first encounter with the artistic realm was through drawing classes in middle school.
I was really passionate about my teacher’s skills and started drawing during my leisure time. In 2014, I decided to professionalize myself and completed a 3-year training at the training centre of the Togolese visual artist Denis AGBOH at the Crafts Village (Village Artisanal) in Lomé. In 2020, I joined the Cercle d’Art Contemporain (CACO), an association of visual artists in Togo, in which I find more resources and coaching besides my elders like Henry SEGBAYA, Agbegnigan ALIHONOU , Adokoé ADOTEVI and others.

LC – Is there an unrealised or unrealisable project, even a crazy one, that you would like to work on?
GT- My dream is to build an adequate cultural centre in Togo my home country in order to host various artistic events. This centre will also aim at detecting and training young talents. I would also love to organise a big exhibition with artists from all over the world on mount Kilimanjaro (the African highest peak) in order to support the fight against discrimination towards the albinos in Africa. ITSLIQUID GROUP will be very welcome on this project as a main partner if you are interested.

LC – What are the three hashtags essential to define your poetics that you could not give up?
GT – Education, love and peace. It means with education we will know the value of every human being on this earth and spread love around ourselves and where we have love, we have peace that will expand to the other extremities of the earth.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
GT – The human society and its interaction with nature is my main source of inspiration. Simply put, human within nature inspires me. I always try to move the hearts of people towards some of the challenges the world is facing in order to contribute to the education of our societies. My portfolio contains artworks of the Covid-19 Pandemic and global warming to name a few. Finally, my paintings are also a kind of mirror that reflects the very rich African culture of this world full of diversity.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
GT – As you already mentioned on your official website, the VISIONS exhibition “aims to explore all different facets of the social, physical and cultural identities of our contemporary society” and my artwork “Dimensions Humaines 2” fits well in this framework. First of all it portrays some of the social roles we play in our societies. Secondly, it lays emphasis on the fact that humans are products of the type of environment they are living in.

LC -We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the exhibition or as a part of preexisting works?
GT – This artwork I have exhibited with you is part of a new collection that I created in 2022 and your event was a great opportunity for me to reveal it to the public. It is the second part of a collection named “Dimensions humaines” which portrays different stages of human life.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
GT – Of course. Speaking for myself you are revealing me to the world, and this is the kind of channel most of underground artists need to get noticed.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
GT – Yes, I really love the spontaneous way you deal with the queries. Your staff is there in the background making sure that I get the offer that fits my means and expectations. I remember writing in one of the e-mails “Sorry for the disturbance for changing my mind again” and the reply from one of your team members was so sweet telling us not to worry about that because you are there to help us find the best offer. I want to use this opportunity to thank again you and your team for the outstanding customer service.

LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
GT – For now all good, just keep it up. Once I have anything, I will not hesitate to mention that. And I wish you all the best on your various projects.
