Interview: Gerard Puxhe
Luca Curci talks with Gerard Puxhe during MIXING IDENTITIES, second appointment of CANVAS INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2023, held in Venice, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello

Gerard Puxhe is an international award-winning Spanish, London based independent designer and digital artist. Gerard creates cutting-edgedesigns by using disruptive artwork that aims users with an urban casual tech lifestyle. His work showcases distinctive creativity and a unique style. Throughout his career Gerard has worked on top-notch projects across Europe as well as collaborated with different brands. He currently runs his personal studio-brand, where he designs and produces big format parametrical artwork that’s applied onto wall murals, prints and home textile. His work experiments with geometries that explore different concepts such as form fluidity, fineness, movement and disruption of the conventional. The result is a collection of different compositions that integrates with the space in a natural manner. These architectural artworks provide deepness, differentiation and a unique personality to any interior as it becomes an extension of the space without interfering with the rest of elements. This innovative work has been granted with several international awards and exhibited in some of the most prestigious design events in the world, such as Milan, London or Venice.

Luca Curci- What are you currently working on?
Gerard Puxhe
– I’m working on new parametrical artworks exploring different techniques, as well as implementing AI into the creation process.

LC – How much has the city/country in which you grew up/born affected your work as an artist?
GP
– I’m from Malaga (Spain), like Picasso! The city belongs to the Andalucia region, which is one of the most cultural places on the planet. Art is all over our traditions, from music (flamenco and others) and religion to architecture. It’s a place where many cultures have left their mark in many different ways, especially Arabs. I believe my geometrical approach to art is a reflection of all of it.

LC- How is being an artist nowadays?
GP
– I have a design background and always felt like a designer. But I’ve always had a highly creative and artistic approach to it so becoming a digital artist has been the logical path for me. There’re many opportunities but at the same time a lot of competition. We all have to find the right balance between artwork and sources of income.

LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
GP
– My artwork is geometrical and abstract. I like to explore and experiment with shapes that evoke beauty by themselves. Like nature, we find beauty all around just by the impact of shapes and colours. It’s amazing how a simple curve can cause a relaxing effect in our minds.

LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?
GP
– It is always a very fulfilling moment but at the same time the non-related work to art starts. That’s content creation, marketing, etc. which requires a lot of time.

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the exhibition’s theme?
GP
– Abstract artworks always have that mix of emotions depending on the viewer. Mixing identities relates to that unique vision and how we identify what surrounds us.

LC – Can you explain something about the artworks you have in our exhibition?
GP
– Mesh 02 is one of the three artworks parts of the Mesh series in white. It has been created by using a parametrical design based on algorithms that experiment with the beauty of volume breakdown and fluidity of movement, giving as a result an ultra-complex but fragile piece.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
GP
– Of course, I’m very grateful to ItsLiquid. It’s the second time I’m exhibiting with the organization. The first time, I was part of the winners list for the 2020 Itsliquid contest so I was invited to exhibit in Venice. This second time I’m the winner of the 2022 Itsliquid contest, so I’ve been invited to exhibit in different cities such as Venice, Rome and London.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
GP
– It’s a great opportunity for artists to showcase their work and to be able to be part of contests where you can have the chance to exhibit. There’re many events throughout the year so plenty of opportunities.
