Interview: Giulia De Martino
Luca Curci talks with Giulia De Martino during VISIONS, third appointment of the ANIMA MUNDI 2022, at Palazzo Bembo.
Giulia De Martino is a Sicilian painter who mainly deals with abstract artists whose works have been exhibited nationally. Her path was born with psychology, she graduated with honours in Clinical Psychology, she was very inspired by the study of the unconscious, and neuroesthetics and travelled around the world. Her focus lies in chromatic research, a dimension suspended between dream and inner reality, seeking the spontaneity and immediacy of color. She has received numerous national and international awards, especially from Circle Foundation for the Arts also two of her works are part of the collection of the MIIT museum in Turin.

Luca Curci – What are you currently working on?
Giulia De Martino – I am currently working on a series of drawings (with oil pastels) on Chinese mulberry paper inspired by nature and the mechanisms related to transformation. I would like these latest works to be an expression of primordial energy.
LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
GDM – I graduated with honors in clinical psychology a few years ago but I have always had a passion for art since I was a child. I have always been self-taught with a great desire to experiment. I started as a teenager with very simple surrealist drawings and then with acrylic painting and then with oil painting. The major influences are related to what I studied in psychology, the unconscious and neuroesthetics but I was inspired by the trips I made around the world (Turkey, Thailand, Uzbekistan, etc. ..). The trip to Japan in 2015 strongly influenced me, the encounter with a different culture and spirituality allowed me to observe the world in an alternative way, especially on a chromatic level. I think that the chromatic dimension has a lot to do with the artist’s interiority and spirituality, which is why the chromatic dimension is fundamental in my works. The chromatic research in my art is inner research.
LC – Which art themes do you pursue? What is your preferred subject, if there is any?
GDM – My art is essentially based on the spontaneity of expression and my goal is to create a direct connection with the observer. The main theme is linked to freedom, in the latest works the subjects are varied, in addition to nature there are themes against racism and the fear of diversity in general. Lately, I have also created some drawings as a sort of storytelling. However, my favourite subjects are abstract and sometimes they lead to expressionism.

LC – How do you choose your subjects? Is it a reasoned or an instinctive process?
GDM – The choice is very instinctive, it depends on what I am inspired by, from a journey, something I have read or seen.
LC – Do you use art to express something in particular? Is it your medium of expression?
GDM – Art is my main means of expression. I use art to express myself and my inner self, essentially, it’s a way to communicate with others. For me, it is much easier to paint or draw perhaps than to tell what I have read or seen.
LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
GDM – The work I presented in this exhibition is titled Metamorphosis, it is a painting on a jute canvas. It is linked to the exhibition because the metamorphosis represents the transformation in nature. The work is in profound connection with all that is profoundly vital.

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the exhibition or as a part of preexisting works?
GDM – The work was done earlier because, for several weeks, I started a series of works inspired by primordial nature.
LC – What is your idea about ITSLIQUID GROUP?
GDM – I think it’s a group of professionals who really like their work.
LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
GDM – I think it’s an event with attention to detail that can give artists a lot of visibility.
LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
GDM – I would recommend a collaboration for your professionalism. I think it offers some unique services that all artists would love to have.
