Interview: Giuseppe Caridi
Luca Curci talks with Giuseppe Caridi during BARCELONA CONTEMPORARY – 3RD EDITION at Valid World Hall Gallery.
“After a degree in Law, I have been working in Euro Disneyland Paris and then in a bank along 19 years. Writer and photographer, I live in Gallipoli, Apulia, Italy, when not abroad because of my job. Former football referee, I have been an instructor of International Humanitarian Law on behalf of the International Red Cross Committee, Geneva. Licensed PADI “RESCUE DIVER”, I have visited over 150 countries in the world. I currently work as a travel designer: trekking, archaeological and cultural tours, Africa and diving safaris. I have edited two books: “Sette Passaporti”, Diabasis, 2018, and “Afghanistan – Viaggio nel cuore di un popolo straordinario”, Ultra, 2020. I was awarded in literary and photography contests in Italy and abroad. My shots have been published by several magazines and newspapers, among them National Geographic and Touring Club Italiano (both of them just online). I have been involved for years in volunteering activities, and I am among the creators of the scientific project The Climate Route.

Luca Curci – How did you get to photography? Do you remember why you took your first professional photo?
Giuseppe Caridi – I actually became a photographer in my teens, but I have been involved professionally only in the latest years: photography requires time to dedicate to your own work, constancy and a lot of study of the works of current and past Masters.
LC – According to you, what makes a good photo? Which details do you focus on?
GC – It depends on the genre a photographer is involved in: it could be the strength of a subject, a particular light, pure creativity… I am mainly keen on Street Photography, Reportage and Landscape, so I always try to tell as much as I can in every single frame. My goal is that people who are watching my work can understand my feelings and my message as well.

LC – When you take photos, are you usually inspired by the situation or do you find inspiration in yourself?
GC – Well, I think both of those factors can be considered: it is awesome to let something unexpected let you switch suddenly on your camera, but I guess it is even more rewarding to ‘study’ well in advance a certain situation, context or place and then go shooting.
LC – Do visitors’ suggestions enrich yourself and your art?
GC – According to my experience, every suggestion is a great opportunity to improve, to get enriched by someone else path and to discover new ways of releasing an image.
LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
GC – Trying to match the previous work done at home with the one on the field, which often seems to be too much different. Just on the field, it always happens I realize the time I thought could be enough to dedicate to the shooting session is never enough.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the exhibition?
GC – I decide carefully to which exhibition apply for: the one you are running in Barcelona made me decide to apply because it is a topic I have been working on in some of my works. Art can be seen – and created – in several ways, ITSLIQUID has just suggested its own.
LC – Can you explain something about the artworks you have in our exhibition?
GC – I love traveling: I have tried to fit your criteria with the experiences I have had in some of my favorite places on Planet Earth. I am really grateful you appreciated my effort and my choices. Whether a hot canyon in the Sahara, a face whose wrinkles talk more than a book itself up to a creative shot, I always try to tell something particular about the place I am living in.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
GC – Definitely yes: nowadays there are many possibilities for photographers to put on show their works, but only a few can offer plenty of visibility like your initiatives. Having my work on display in Barcelona is really something I could not expect till a few years ago.
LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
GC – Absolutely: I have been helped in every step of the whole process and everything has been working regularly without any problem. Thank you for your help!
LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
GC – Of course, you have been reliable and punctual, something not so usual in every field nowadays. Professional, serious, and reliable: ITSLIQUID has helped me in the best way. I hope we can collaborate in the future once again. Thank you!
