Luca Curci
talks with Gulschan Rokzad during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2021 – 9TH EDITION, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

“I’m Gulschan Rokzad and I’m an artist from Germany. I live near Nürnberg. But I was born in Northern Iraq. I’m Kurdish. I have been drawing sketches since I was in elementary school and now I use acrylic as a medium on canvas. I work in a room in my apartment. I completed vocational training in fashion and textiles. I learned construction and design. My painting is about my thoughts and feelings, as well as memories of my childhood when I escaped with my family from Northern Iraq to Iran on foot through the countryside”.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
GR
– I thought the concept of this exhibition was great. It was an honor to be selected as an artist. The city of Venice inspired me and then the art exhibitions there.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
GR
– In the first work, The way to the paradise island, I want to show that there is a way out of the sometimes stressful day to mentally flee. In the second work, I painted a special moment that I experienced while hiking in Germany in the high Alps in Bavaria. It fit with the theme of the entire exhibition, as landscapes were shown in a special style.
