Interview: Gulschan Rokzad
Luca Curci talks with Gulschan Rokzad during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2021 – 9TH EDITION, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.
“I’m Gulschan Rokzad and I’m an artist from Germany. I live near Nürnberg. But I was born in Northern Iraq. I’m Kurdish. I have been drawing sketches since I was in elementary school and now I use acrylic as a medium on canvas. I work in a room in my apartment. I completed vocational training in fashion and textiles. I learned construction and design. My painting is about my thoughts and feelings, as well as memories of my childhood when I escaped with my family from Northern Iraq to Iran on foot through the countryside”.
LUCA CURCI – Which subject are you working on?
GULSCHAN ROKZAD – I am working on the subject of personal memories.
LC- How did you get to your current artistic practice?
GR – I have been drawing sketches since primary school and later, after completing my training in textiles, I paint on canvases with acrylic.
LC – Which is the role the artist plays in society? And contemporary art?
GR – With my art, I want to show that memories of the moments, feelings and thoughts can bring joy to our lives. My style distinguishes my art.
LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
GR – The inspirations are from my memories and from the moments around me and from my travels
LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
GR – The greatest challenge is to paint the emotions from the memories and the surroundings as I feel them.
LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
GR – I thought the concept of this exhibition was great. It was an honor to be selected as an artist. The city of Venice inspired me and then the art exhibitions there.
LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
GR – In the first work, The way to the paradise island, I want to show that there is a way out of the sometimes stressful day to mentally flee. In the second work, I painted a special moment that I experienced while hiking in Germany in the high Alps in Bavaria. It fit with the theme of the entire exhibition, as landscapes were shown in a special style.
LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
GR – I would like to work with ITSLIQUID GROUP. The services were good and great effort and solutions were given. That was very positive.
LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
GR – I can’t make any suggestions at the moment.
LC – What is your idea about ITSLIQUID GROUP?
GR – My idea of ITSLIQUID GROUP is excellent, as international artists are involved.
