Interview: Hui Zhang
Luca Curci talks with Hui Zhang during VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2021 and BODIES+CITIES SKIN, the first appointment of BORDERS ART FAIR 2021, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.
I often forget what I have done. Only new ideas can arouse my interest. So for me, organizing my resume is hard work. If it is not absolutely necessary, I suggest that you, like me, just pay attention to the artwork itself.

Luca Curci – How did you get to your current artistic practice?
Hui Zhang – A very important part of my personal recent creation is digital image art. The original intention of creating these works stems from my interest in new technologies. In this era, the intervention and influence of digital technology on art are very obvious.
LC – How much is the editing process important? How’s yours?
HZ – Yes, for such large-scale digital artworks, the editing work is complicated and tedious. On the one hand, a wealth of visual experience is needed to determine the light, the texture of the object, the plot of the scene, etc., on the other hand, a computer with excellent performance is required to complete the calculation, and a good artistic micro-jet system output is required to ensure the quality of the work.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artwork?
HZ – The biggest challenge in the work is to find a suitable carrier for expressing thoughts and emotions. My work does not come from the objective world, but from my own imagination and subjective creation. Therefore, to make the picture convey self-consciousness, it is necessary to construct a reasonable Dreamland.
LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
HZ – Inspiration is a complex mixture, and it is difficult to summarize the generation of inspiration with several conditions. My inspiration should come from the fusion of science fiction literature, human history, and childhood memories.
LC – Are your works focused on a specific theme?
HZ – In terms of the theme of the work, there is an inherent emotional connection in my work. I may pay more attention to my own description of memory and worry about history. I think many human problems can have their results in history, but these problems still exist in modern society.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
HZ – Yes, I think that the liquid and the space that humans can perceive are two very good concepts, and they are a summary of the perceivable world and the constantly changing consciousness.
LC – Can you explain something about the artworks you have in our exhibition?
HZ – This work is my most important work in recent years. It is a world frozen in memory and history, waiting for those who cannot come. Can artificial control of the population guarantee a better world? I believe even more that the advancement of science will enable mankind to have a better life and accommodate more people into this world.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
HZ – The promotion of artist’s works through the Internet and the holding of fairs are both important contemporary art media methods. I think your platform is an accurate positioning.
LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
HZ – If you can trust the artist’s creation and persist in dissemination for a long time, I think this platform should be able to bring more opportunities for artists.
LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
HZ – I personally like European art very much. Music and painting are both important parts of human civilization. If my work can be recognized by your platform, I sincerely hope that I can continue to cooperate with you and introduce my work to the audience. As for services, I hope to establish a long-term cooperative relationship with regular publicity functions.
