Interview: Jacqueline Schubert
Luca Curci talks with Jacqueline Schubert during FUTURE LANDSCAPES, second event of SENSES ART FAIR 2023 at Medina Art Gallery in Rome.

I studied, worked and lived abroad for a long time before I started painting in 2015. Now I live in Germany, near Düsseldorf as a freelance artist. Style and Technique I developed decisively through attending the master class for painting and my regular work in a group with several artists. Most of my artworks are experimental, permanently incorporating new media and materials in the creative process. The topics revolve around things in everyday life, unusual perspectives and motif fragments. The style of painting is modern, expressionistic and colourful. I take my inspiration from nature, personal experiences or current events. Most of the time I work independently as an individual artist. But I have also been working together since 2020 in an artist group “quARTed” with a total of 4 painters. I organize exhibitions in Germany (Krefeld, Düsseldorf, Berlin), but have also already been able to exhibit some works internationally (e.g. with ITSLIQUID in Venice and Rome).

Luca Curci – Which subject are you working on?
Jacqueline Schubert – At the moment I work on 2 projects. “SOULS” is an objective work in which I focus on animals with their souls and characteristics. A total of around 20 paintings should be created, all in a format of 30×40 cm upright, in a white passe-partout of 40x50cm. I regularly work in the artist group “quARTed“ (4 artists-1 artwork). A new artwork is currently being created in the format 100x100cm on the plane.

LC – How did you get to your current artistic practice?
JS – When I started painting in 2015, I studied painting and drawing in the Free Masterclass for 4 years. Since then I have been working either alone or with various artists. This is how we exchange ideas, learn and inspire each other.

LC – What are the three hashtags essential to define your poetics that you could not give up?
JS – I would say, my hashtags could be:
• Curious
• Full of life
• Powerful

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
JS – I find inspiration in nature, in everyday life and through current events. Sometimes completely new insights arise through discussions or provocative questions. This can shift classic approaches into dynamic modern paintings.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
JS – It is not easy to meet your own quality and expression. I‘m always looking for modern and new ways to paint:
• Which elements are important?
• What do they mean by the motif?

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
JS – Landscapes are an interesting thing. What do they say about us? I was really excited to see the different interpretations of it. All components were remixed: materials, colours, and motifs. I found the bringing together of these differences very skilful and extremely aesthetic.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it
connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?

JS – My pieces each showed a little moment of nature. Two were painted in natural tones, on canvas and wood – flowing in space and yet abstract. Art and artificial, as landscapes are. Two other works consist of concrete silhouettes, in a moment of movement as part of the landscape. They were formed from straw. A piece of nature in artificial shape, that too is our reality.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
JS – The website is phantastic, it‘s user-friendly, has great links to every event. The used images and photos are atmospheric and inviting. It‘s fun to explore individual aspects. There is short information everywhere.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
JS – I liked the cooperation with ITSLIQUID very much. The whole team works very professionally. The group has a great website and a fast and uncomplicated communication. There was always support for all questions.

LC – What do you think about the organisation of our event?
JS – The organisation was very smoothly and in my opinion very well done. I got the contact datas for the shipment and could organise all without problems. The communication was clear and quick. I got always answers and assists to my questions.
